Scott Scholz es compositor y bibliotecario musical norteamericano, dirige el sello Tymbal Tapes, periodista musical ocasional, locutor de radio y ávido por conocer y estudiar distintas culturas. Es así como a principios de la pandemia de Covid, investiga cómo otras culturas abordaron las pasadas pandemias. Esto lo impulsó para estudiar y explorar en los tres años siguientes, música antigua, música electroacústica y música antigua y contemporánea de Oriente Medio. Estudió los sistemas musicales de Oriente Medio y comparé cómo se cruzan con la música occidental antigua. Aprendió los aspectos básicos de la síntesis granular. Comenzó a tocar instrumentos como el oud y el saz/baglama, instrumenrtos arraigados en el folk turco. Incorporó el microtonalismo para relevar las melodías que evocan las influencias de Oriente Medio en las canciones de la música occidental.
Reconstruyó un viejo tanbur kurdo y destripó los aparatos electrónicos de sus viejas guitarras. Utilizó síntesis granular para crear texturas, manipulando las guitarras microtonalmente y a través de sintetizadores de software.
Con este complejo entramado Sholz compone “Whip Sigils”, combinando técnicas electroacústicas, psicodelia turca de los años 70, minimalismo, ambient y noise.
Este álbum que comprende seis tracks, más un tema extra en vivo, arranca con “Nu ist diu betfart so here (14th. C. geisslerlied)”, una canción que alterna suaves acordes de guitarra, junto a una ráfaga de riffs de bordes distorsionados, combinando la parsimonia de la música medieval con el post-rock. “Maria unser frowe (14th C. geisslerlied)” comienza con un solo de guitarra que transporta a la música de Oriente Medio, e invita a escucharla profundamente. En “Nu tret herzuo der bossen welle (14th C. geisslerlied)” la solemnidad de un coro que acompaña un dulce oud, conmueve por su bellas melodías, en tanto la guitarra en la canción “Chi vole lo mondo despreccare (13th C. lauda)” se siente melancólica y nostálgica. “Le bouvier (13th C. Cathar hymn anticipating their imminent demise) (aka Le Boier, aka Lo Boier)” muestra cómo las melodías se pulverizan a través de la síntesis granular, revelando una abstracción exquisita, en contrapunto a la armonía. “Dolor Pianto, aka Carro della morte” es un canto fúnebre con notas sombrías y cierto atisbo a canción religiosa. Cierra este disco “Le Bouvier, live at Bitchwizard April 2, 2023”, una presentación en vivo que transmite la seducción de la música del Oriente Medio.

Scott Scholz is an American composer and music librarian, runs the Tymbal Tapes label, occasional music journalist, radio host and eager to study and learn about different cultures. This is how in the early Covid pandemic days, he started a research how other cultures approached past pandemics. This prompted him to study and explore, over the next three years, ancient music, electroacoustic music, and early and contemporary Middle Eastern music. Also studied Middle Eastern musical systems and compared how they intersect with early Western music. He learned the basic concepts of granular synthesis, started to play instruments such as the oud and the saz/baglama, instruments rooted in Turkish folk. He incorporated microtonalism to highlight melodies that evoke Middle Eastern influences in Western music songs.
He played guitar again to add microtones and reconstructed an old Kurdish tanbur and stripped the electronics out of his old guitars and used granular synthesis to create textures, manipulating the guitars microtonally and through software synthesizers.
With this complex framework Sholz composes “Whip Sigils”, combining electroacoustic techniques, 70s Turkish psychedelia, minimalism, post-rock, ambient and noise.
This album, which comprises six tracks, plus a bonus live track, starts with “Nu ist diu betfart so here (14th. C. geisslerlied)”, a song that alternates soft guitar chords, along with a flurry of riffs with distorted edges, combining the parsimony of medieval music with post-rock. “Maria unser frowe (14th C. geisslerlied)” starts with a guitar solo that transports to the Middle East music, and invites to listen it deeply. On “Nu tret herzuo der bossen welle (14th C. geisslerlied)” the solemnity of a choir that accompanies a sweet oud, moves with its beautiful melodies, while the guitar in the song “Chi vole lo mondo despreccare (13th C. lauda) )” feels melancholic and nostalgic. “Le bouvier (13th C. Cathar hymn anticipating their imminent demise) (aka Le Boier, aka Lo Boier)” showcase how melodies are pulverized through granular synthesis, revealing an exquisite abstraction, in counterpoint to harmony. “Dolor Pianto, aka Carro della morte” is a dirge with somber notes and a hint of a religious song. This album closes with “Le Bouvier, live at Bitchwizard April 2, 2023”, a live performance that conveys the beguiling of Middle Eastern music.
