El guitarrista y cantante neozelandés Michael Morley es unos precursores en los '80 de la escena rock-noise de Nueva Zelanda, con más de 40 discos a su haber en su carrera en solitario, como en colaboración con artistas tales como My Cat Is An Alien, Lee Ranaldo, Bill Orcutt, Tom Carter, entre otros.

Sus proyectos en solitario son GATE, The Righteous Yeah y bajo su propio nombre. Además, junto a otros artistas es miembro de Sun Valley (junto David Haines y Joyce Hinterding), The Dead C (junto a Bruce Russell y Robbie Yeats), The Fuck Chairs (junto a Morgan Oliver). Morley abarca otros campos como las instalaciones sonoras y varios proyectos como con el dulcémele (un instrumento de cuerda percutido), Baldwin Fun Machine y un proyecto minimalista con sintetizador.

En 2012, se grabó “The Numbers” después de que Morley estuvo tocando durante dos días una guitarra, un sintetizador y una caja de ritmos. Se lo ofreció a un sello para su publicación, sin embargo no tuvo respuesta, por lo que decidió guardarlo en sus archivos por diez años, hasta que decidió publicarlo después en su página de Bandcamp, para que no pasara en vano el trabajo realizado. Este hecho anecdótico aunque real, cuesta creerlo viniendo de un músico conocido en la escena rock experimental.

“The Numbers” consiste en seis canciones de rock improvisadas y sin ser ensayadas previamente que se desarrollan progresivamente, cuyo hilo conductor son los punteos, riffs ácidos y efectos wah-wah, junto a unas sutiles líneas de sintetizador y pesados y aletargado golpes de la caja de ritmos. En la medida que avanza el disco, la voz de Morley se torna más desgarradora y la distorsión de la guitarra se transforma en ruido blanco que se despliega como un drone.

Morley imprime a este disco mucha potencia y solidez que le brota en forma intuitiva y también es el resultado de una experiencia de más de 40 años.

Morley encompass other fields such as sound installations and various ventures like a hammered dulcimer project, a Baldwin Fun Machine project, and a minimal synth project.

His solo outputs are GATE, The Righteous Yeah and under his own name. Furthermore, alongside other artists he’s a member of Sun Valley (David Haines and Joyce Hinterding), The Dead C (Bruce Russell and Robbie Yeats) and The Fuck Chairs (Morgan Oliver).

In 2012, “The Numbers” was recorded after Morley had spent two days playing a guitar, synthesizer and drum machine. He offered it to a label for publication, however he had no response, so he decided to keep it in his archive for ten years, until he decided to publish it on his Bandcamp page, so that the work done will not go in vain. This anecdotal fact, although real, is hard to believe coming from a well-known musician in the experimental rock scene.

“The Numbers” consists of six improvised and unrehearsed rock songs that develops progressively, whose common thread is plucking, acid riffs and wah-wah effects, along with subtle synth lines and heavy and lethargic beats from the drum machine. As the record progresses, Morley's voice becomes more harrowing and the guitar distortion turns into white noise that unfurls like a drone.

Morley gives this album a lot of power and solidity that comes out intuitively and is also the result of more than 40 years of experience.
