Olof Dreijer y Mount Sims se juntan para hacer un disco cuyo instrumento principal y protagónico es el tambor de acero, originario de Trinidad y Tobago.

El sueco Olof Dreijer es miembro del dúo de electrónica The Knife, formado con su hermana Karin y también DJ. En tanto que Mount Sims de Estados Unidos, se hizo conocido por su pop electrónico de principios de la década de 2000.

Una organización de Trinidad/Nueva York les pidió que trabajaran en un proyecto utilizando un tambor de acero original hecho por el padre del tambor de acero moderno, la leyenda de Trinidad Ellie Mannette.

Dado que el tambor de acero ha sido estereotipado por Occidente por su pasado colonial, el dúo trabajó 10 años hasta sacar su propio sonido del tambor de acero y para su disco “Souvenir”, tocaron el instrumento utilizando métodos no tradicionales como rodamientos y agua para producir su propio sonido, a fin de matizar resonancia metálica del tambor de acero.

El disco que consiste en cinco temas abre con “Liten Karin“, reinterpretación que hace el dúo a la canción folclórica sueca medieval considerada de tal pulcritud y pura. El resultado es una magnífica canción con un tono casi religioso que alcanza mucha altura, junto a viñetas de efectos electrónicos a los destellos y vibraciones que produce el tambor de acero. “Hybrid Fruit” sugiere una sinuosa melodía que viaja alrededor, junto al golpeteo suave sobre el tambor que dispara luces que encandilan por su belleza. “A Vessel Of Clay” al parecer hay contacto con el agua pues se escuchan sonidos acuosos. “Breaths Of Clay” y su ritmo sincopado me evoca al trabajo del japonés Yoshio Machida, en tanto que “Across This Mud” que cierra esta placa, tiene un enfoque hacia el ruido, por lo que se aprecian ráfagas de sonidos abrasivos.

Olof Dreijer y Mount Sims hacen de este disco un trabajo exploratorio para desplegar una amplia variedad de timbres y texturas.

Olof Dreijer and Mount Sims join forces to make an album whose main and leading instrument is the steel drum, originally from Trinidad and Tobago.

Swedish Olof Dreijer is a member of the electronic duo The Knife, formed with his sister Karin and also works as a DJ. Whereas Mount Sims from the United States, became known for his early 2000s electronic pop.

A Trinidad/New York organization asked them to work on a project using an original steel drum made by the father of the modern steel drum, Trinidad’s legend Ellie Mannette.

Since the steel drum has been stereotyped by the West because of its colonial past, the duo worked 10 years to come up with their own sound from the steel drum and for their album "Souvenir"; they played the instrument using non-traditional methods such as rolling bearings and water to produce their own sound to nuance the metallic resonance of the steel drum. 

The album, which consists of five pieces, opens with “Liten Karin”, a reinterpretation that the duo makes of the medieval Swedish folk song, considered to be so neat and pure. The result is a magnificent song with an almost religious tone that reaches a great height, along with vignettes of electronic effects to the sparkles and vibrations produced by the steel drum. “Hybrid Fruit” suggests a sinuous melody that travels around, together with the soft stomping beat on the steel drum that triggers lights that dazzle with beauty. On “A Vessel Of Clay” apparently there is contact with water as liquid sounds are heard. While, "Breaths Of Clay" and its syncopated rhythm remind me of the work of Japanese musician Yoshio Machida, while "Across This Mud" that closes this album, has an approach on noise, so bursts of abrasive sounds can be appreciated.

Olof Dreijer and Mount Sims make this album an exploratory work to display a wide variety of timbres and textures.
