Brìghde Chaimbeul creció en la Isla Skye en Escocia y es una de las gaiteras más innovadoras de la música celta experimental de su generación. Si bien comenzó tocando las grandes gaitas de las Tierras Altas, su inclinación natural fue por las gaitas de fuelle pequeño. Esto le valió el premio de la BBC a la Young Folk y el premio BBC Horizon.
Su amor por las gaitas Chaimbeul lo explica: “La forma en que primero me acerqué a las gaitas pequeñas, está guiada por la melodía, la sensación y el ritmo de la melodía, en lugar de entrar en toda la técnica", dice, agregando también que se sintió atraída por el timbre de la lengüeta de caña y la combinación única de drones. Esto despliega diversas texturas de drones, trance inducido y tradición folk que muestra su segundo álbum, cuyo título “Carry Them With Us” alude al narrador de historias del escocés Iain Sheonaidh Smus. Lo que tiene relación con la investigación que hizo Chaimbeul sobre el folklore galés. Estas historias a su vez están conectadas a canciones, que fue lo que le interesó a la gaitera escocesa, quien contactó – para su nuevo álbum - al paisajista sonoro, saxofonista (también multiinstrumentista), compositor de cine, el norteamericano/canadiense Colin Stetson, conocido como colaborador frecuente en la banda indie Arcade Fire. Lo que le atrajo del trabajo de Stetson con el bajo saxofón, fue su estilo y respiración que encajaban bien con las gaitas. En especial por el carácter hipnótico de su sonido que deriva en diferentes gamas de drones que como dice nuestra protagonista, “es esa sensación de dar vueltas y vueltas a la misma melodía”.
Desde su apertura con “Pililiu - The Call of The Redshank” la deriva pastoral, casi ceremonial del harmonio y el canto de Stetson que va decantando hacia el final de la canción, producen una suerte de bienestar total. En “Banish The Giant of Doubt & Despair” visualice gente bailando animadamente en torno a un fiesta tradicional, en tanto que “Crònan (i)” presenta un drone ensoñador cubierto de bellas melodías. En “Piobaireachd Nan Eun” reaparece la voz susurrante de Stetson y emerge luego el maravilloso y aterciopelado cántico de Brìghde Chaimbeul. “'S Mi Gabhail an Rathaid - I Take The Road” con su ritmo bailable se funde con los asombrosos y serpenteantes balbuceos del saxofón.
Este álbum sorprende por la simbiosis acertada de música tradicional e ideas musicales innovadoras.

Brìghde Chaimbeul grew up on the Isle of Skye in Scotland and is one of the most innovative pipers of her generation in experimental Celtic music. Although she started out playing the big Highland bagpipes, her natural inclination was for bellow-blown smallpipes. This earned her the BBC Young Folk Award and the BBC Horizon Award.
Her love for the Chaimbeul bagpipes she explains: “The way I first approached the smallpipes, it’s led by the melody, the feel and groove of the tune, rather than getting into all the technique,” she says, adding that she was also drawn to its reedy timbre and unique combination of drones. ('The Wire', April 2023) This unfolds various drone textures, trance induced and folk tradition that showcases her second album, whose title "Carry Them With Us" alludes to Scottish storyteller Iain Sheonaidh Smus. Which is related with Chaimbeul's research into Gaelic culture. These stories are in turn connected to songs, which was what interested the Scottish bagpiper, who got in contact with - for her new album - the soundscaper, saxophonist (also multi-instrumentalist), film composer, the American/Canadian Colin Stetson, known as a regular collaborator in the indie band Arcade Fire. What drawn her to Stetson's bass saxophone work was his style and breathing that suited well with the bagpipes. Especially due to the hypnotic character of his sound that derives in different ranges of drones that, as our protagonist comments, “That feeling of going round and round the same melody.”
Since its opening with “Pililiu - The Call of The Redshank” the pastoral, almost ceremonial drift of the harmonium and Stetson's singing that gradually decants towards the end of the song, produce a kind of total well-being. On “Banish The Giant of Doubt & Despair” envision people dancing animatedly around a traditional festival, while “Crònan(i)” features a dreamy drone covered in beautiful melodies. In “Piobaireachd Nan Eun” Stetson's whispery voice reappears and then the wonderful velvety chant of Brìghde Chaimbeul emerges. “'S Mi Gabhail an Rathaid - I Take The Road” with its danceable rhythm blends with the astonishing, meandering babble of the saxophone.
This album strikes by its successful symbiosis of traditional music and innovative musical ideas.
