Wacław Zimpel es polaco, músico multiinstrumentista y compositor radicado en Varsovia quien está activo desde el 2008 lanzando 9 álbumes y un EP. 

Comienza a temprana edad a tocar el piano, así como también el violín y más tarde se forma en clarinete clásico. Para dejar de lado las lecciones formales de música, comienza a improvisar y transita al género del jazz y a tocar el khaen, instrumento de viento de madera originario de Laos, en el sudeste asiático. Luego comienza a incursionar en la electrónica en la vena de la música folk-trance.

Trabajó junto al músico electrónico James Holden editando el álbum "Long Weekend" EP (Border Community, 2020); con Sam Shackleton en el álbum "Primal Forms" (Cosmo Rhythmatic, 2020) y con Jakub Ziołek, con quien realizaron el álbum "Zimpel/Ziołek" (Instant Classic, 2017).

Ha tocado en varias bandas publicando una docena de álbumes. Actualmente tiene el proyecto Saagara combinando jazz, las ragas indias y ha colaborado con  connotados músicos de jazz contemporáneo/libre como Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Joe PcPhee y el famoso compositor y ganador del premio Grammy Evan Ziporyn.

“Train Spotter” consiste en seis piezas cuya composición tenía como propósito capturar los sonidos de la ciudad de Varsovia. También trata sobre la experiencia de Zimpel en una ciudad que recientemente pasó por la pandemia, las recurrentes manifestaciones antigubernamentales contra las violaciones de los derechos humanos, el derecho de las mujeres a elegir y la comunidad LGBTQ, así como la migración de ucraniamos(as) por la guerra y la extraordinaria solidaridad de personas dispuestas a ayudar a quienes lo necesitan.

El álbum abre con “Train Spotter” que despliega un ritmo motorik que evoca los grupos alemanes del krautrock y que continua en “Phantom Paradise” con sus frenéticos pulsos. “Infinite Gray” comienza con ruidos mecanizados que se parecen al traqueteo de un tren, que se funde con densas capas de sintetizadores, teclados y khaen. En “Vanishing Rainbow” serpentea el clarinete manipulado electrónicamente, mientras la flauta khaen crea una atmósfera primitiva como si comenzara una danza tribal. “Broken Souls Whistle” con sus ritmos trepidantes cierra un álbum que fusiona el minimalismo, la electrónica junto a inflexiones de la música del mundo.

Wacław Zimpel is a Polish, Warsaw-based multi-instrumentalist musician and composer who has been active since 2008 with the released of nine albums and one EP.

He began playing the piano at an early age, as well as the violin and later trained in classical clarinet. To put formal music lessons aside, he started improvising which leads him to the jazz genre, and learn to play the khaen, a woodwind instrument originally from Laos, in Southeast Asia. He then begins to dabble in electronics in the vein of folk-trance music.

He worked with electronic musician James Holden releasing the album "Long Weekend" EP (Border Community, 2020); also team-up with Sam Shackleton for the album "Primal Forms" (Cosmo Rhythmatic, 2020) and with Jakub Ziołek, with whom they made the album "Zimpel/Ziołek" (Instant Classic, 2017).

He has played in various bands releasing a dozen albums. He currently has the Saagara project combining jazz and Indian ragas. Zimpel collaborated with renown contemporary/free jazz musicians in the likes of Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Joe PcPhee and famed Grammy Award winning composer Evan Ziporyn.

“Train Spotter” consists of six pieces whose composition was intended to capture the sounds of the city of Warsaw. It also deals with Zimpel's experience in a city recently hit by a pandemic, the recurring anti-government protests against human rights violations, women's right to choose and the LGBTQ community, as well as the migration of Ukrainians because of the war and the extraordinary solidarity of people willing to help those who need it.

The album opens with "Train Spotter" that displays a motorik rhythm that evokes German krautrock groups and continues on "Phantom Paradise" with its frenetic pulses. “Infinite Gray” begins with mechanized noises that resemble the rattle of a train that fuse thick layers of synths, keyboards, and khaen. "Broken Souls Whistle" with its frenetic pace closes an album that fuses minimalism, electronics with inflections to the world music.
