Observatories | "Our Recently Acquired Knowledge" | IIKKI | 2023

Observatories | "Our Recently Acquired Knowledge" | IIKKI | 2023

Observatories is made up of Ian Hawgood and Craig Tattersall, two renown artists of the ambient scene. Both produce the music for “Our Recently Acquired Knowledge” which - like every IIKKI release - has a correlate to a book. In this case it is “7 AM” which includes photographs by Tereza Kozinc and Klavdij Sluban artists.

Hawgood is a curator for Home Normal, Nomadic Kids Republic, Tokyo Droneing, among others. His long discography is spread across the Morr Music, 12k, Laaps, Slowcraft, Dauw, Slaapwel and Home Normal labels. He works on various collaborative projects such as Slow Reels, Monogoto, Observatories, Rosales, to name a few.

Tattersall, aka The Humble Bee, is the founder of The Boats and has collaborated with Bill Seaman, Daniel Crossley and on various releases with Thomas Shrubsole.

The vast places that the photographs show, in addition to pictures of mother-son, a child facing the immensity of the ocean plus abstract figures, are the fitting soundtrack to the dreamy, slightly nostalgic soundscapes on this record containing six ambient pieces that starts with “Sapphire Waters”. A song that displays small guitar chords with some electronic treatments translated into glitches. “Don't Be Too Hard On Yourself” features a set of ambient keyboards revolving around a loop, while the album's title track reveals a calm atmosphere. On “The Resistance Of” synth pads develop uplifting melodies, while “Snow And Stars Danced Through The Night” is nourished by a guitar loop and a harp (or similar) which circulates and expands slowly. The last song "I've Lost Confidence In Words" closes an album whose cozy melodies allow you to embrace the images in the book, observe them carefully while the warm and enveloping music spins.
