Ben Frost de Melbourne, Australia quien vive en Reykiavik, Islandia, es un artista sonoro que trabaja en el campo de la música, las instalaciones sonoras, artes visuales y la composición de bandas sonoras.

Sus influencias provienen del minimalismo, la música contemporánea pero por sobre todo del post-industrial de la desaparecida banda Swans.

Frost ha estado activo desde 2003 y sus lanzamientos han sido editados en sellos como Room40, Bedroom Community, Mute, entre otros. En 2019, Frost compuso la banda sonora para la serie de Netflix, “Dark” y este año para la misma plataforma, compuso la música para la serie “1899” y el sello Vinyl Factory lanzó el pasado mes de noviembre, “Broken Spectre”; la banda sonora que compuso Frost para una exhibición del fotógrafo Richard Mosse.

Dado el interés en común sobre el cambio climático y el proceso de deforestación en la Amazonía de Brasil, Frost y Mosse se unieron para documentar su colapso ambiental. Para ello realizaron entre 2018 y 2022 grabaciones de campo, utilizando tecnología de imágenes científicas y dispositivos de grabación de sonido complejos para capturar las frecuencias ultra altas, imperceptibles para el ser humano. Además hay un trabajo de diseño sonoro que produce texturas electrónicas abstractas.

Este álbum arranca con “Report from an Obscure Planet” en el que se exponen diferentes sonidos de pájaros, insectos, murciélagos y otros animales que viven en la selva amazónica. En “The Index” el ambiente intrigante de las texturas electrónicas abrasivas construyen agudas notas sintéticas con ribetes oscuros. En “The Burning World” el sonido de un buho (al parecer) asoma en primer plano, mientras una nota palpitante de sintetizador comienza a penetrar lentamente y a desaparecer de la misma forma. “Passport to Eternity” muestra una nota sostenida generando una atmósfera enrarecida y escalofriante. La respiración espasmódica que asoma en “The Intensive Care Unit” es tan desesperante como angustiante. “The Garden of Time” continua con los ambientes oscuros y los silbidos atmosféricos de sintetizador. “The Killing Ground” tiene una carácter ambiental que conecta con la tranquilidad, aunque igual denotan espacios inquietantes. En “Low Flying Aircraft” se mezclan los sonidos reales que producen los pájaros con aquellos que Frost procesa electrónicamente. En “A Guide to Virtual Death” Frost crea espacios orquestales sintetizados abstractos.

Frost en “Broken Spectre” predice un futuro incierto, donde el silencio prevalece sobre el sonido vivo de la naturaleza y fauna de la Amazonía.

Born in Melbourne, Australia and based in Reykjavík, Iceland, Ben Frost is a sound artist working in the fields of music, sound installation, visual art and soundtrack composition.

His influences come from minimalism, contemporary music but above all from the post-industrial music of the defunct band Swans.

Frost has been active since 2003 and his releases have been released on labels such as Room40, Bedroom Community, Mute, among others. In 2019, Frost composed the soundtrack for the Netflix series, "Dark" and this year for the same platform, he composed the music for the series "1899", and the Vinyl Factory label released last November, "Broken Spectre"; a soundtrack composed by Frost for an exhibition by photographer Richard Mosse.

Given their common interest in climate change and the deforestation process in the Brazilian Amazon, Frost and Mosse teamed up to document its environmental collapse. To do this, they made between 2018 and 2022 field recordings, using scientific imaging technology and complex sound recording devices to capture ultra-high frequencies, imperceptible to humans. In addition, there is a sound design work that produces abstract electronic textures. 

This album starts with "Report from an Obscure Planet" in which different bird chirps, insects, bats and other animals that live in the Amazon jungle are exposed. In "The Index" the intriguing environment of abrasive electronic textures build sharp synthetic notes with dark edges. On “The Burning World” the sound of an owl (apparently) looms in the foreground, while throbbing synth notes start slowly to penetrate and disappear. “Passport to Eternity” shows a sustained note generating a rarefied and chilling atmosphere. The spasmodic breathing that appears in "The Intensive Care Unit" is as desperate as it is distressing. “The Garden of Time” continues with the dark environments and an atmospheric whoosh of synthesizer. "The Killing Ground" has an environmental character that connects with tranquility, although they still denote disturbing spaces. In “Low Flying Aircraft” the real sounds produced by birds are mixed with those that Frost processes electronically. On “A Guide to Virtual Death” Frost creates abstract synthesized orchestral spaces.

Ben Frost in "Broken Spectre" predicts an uncertain future, where silence prevails over the living sound of nature and fauna of the Amazon.
