Esmerine | ‘Everything Was Forever Until It Was No More’ | Constellation Records | 2022

Septiembre 2022

Esmerine was co-founded by percussionist Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and cellist Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Set Fire To Flames, Silver Mt Zion) in 2001. Currently they form a quintet: on percussion Jamie Thompson (The Unicorns, Islands), multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson (Sowfi, The Silver Hearts) and bassist Jéremi Roy (Bellflower, Chienvoler).

Esmerine has seven albums, most of them released on the renowned Canadian label Constellation Records. The music on the seven songs on this album features their different facets, from a modern chamber music group performing contemporary classical music, to a rock band playing post-rock, punk, folk and world music.

The depth and the timbres are diverse because the instruments played by the quintet are very rich in their variety. From the traditional Chinese hulusi flute, to brass instruments such as the flugelhorn, melophone or sousaphone, passing to the upright bass and the electric guitar. There are several gems here like ‘Entropy: Incantation – Radiance – The Wild Sea’ with the parsimony of the violins and the drums emerging with the guitar firing off its riffs. The beautiful piano chords of ‘Hymn for Rob,’ the pulsating bass and crystaling guitars in ‘Imaginary Pasts,’ to the elegantly unfolding piano and melancholy violin on ‘Wakesleep.’

With this new installment Esmerine does nothing more than confirm their compositional quality as well as their excellent performance.
