Alexandra Spence es una artista sonora residente en Sidney quien grabó, interpretó, compuso y mezcló este disco entre 2014 y 2020 en Vancouver, Hong Kong y Sydney. “A Necessary Softness” es el segundo disco en Room40 y quinto en su carrera. 

Spence ha presentado y actuado en galerías y festivales en Europa, Australia y Tokio. 

Trabaja en diseño sonoro donde las texturas electrónicas contienen glitches, ondas sonoras, objetos encontrados y grabaciones de campo. En relación al disco, Spence argumenta: “Tengo una obsesión casi espiritual con la animación de material y objeto a través del sonido. “A Necessary Softness” es mi intento de aferrarme y traducir a través del sonido esta fascinación por el material, el objeto y el lugar”. En relación a los registros de campo estos representan el hábitat de las ciudades mencionadas más arriba.

“Tidewater” y “Waves” muestra la estructura de la marea, el movimiento ondulante que es representado por sutiles sonidos digitales. En “Bell, Fern” unas campanillas son procesadas quedando sus ecos suspendidos en el espacio, en tanto se entrecruzan solapadamente voces y ruidos. “Rain” captura sonidos de aves, grillos y otros insectos y desde luego de la lluvia.

Spence muestra su sensibilidad por los entornos en que vive o que ha vivido, a través de capas rugosas y suaves tejiendo paisajes sonoros intrigantes y misteriosos.

Alexandra Spence is a Sydney-based sound artist who recorded, performed, composed and mixed this album between 2014 and 2020 in Vancouver, Hong Kong and Sydney. "A Necessary Softness" is the second album on Room40 and the fifth in her career. She has presented and performed her works in galleries and festivals in Europe, Australia, and Tokyo.

Spence works in sound design where electronic textures contain glitches, sound waves, found objects, and field recordings. Regarding the album, Spence argues:

“I have a near-spiritual obsession with the animation of material and object through sound. “A Necessary Softness” is my attempt to hold onto and translate through sound this fascination with material, object and place.” In relation to the field recordings they represent the habitat of the cities above mentioned.

"Tidewater" and "Waves" show the structure of the tide, the waving movement that is represented by subtle digital sounds. On "Bell, Fern" some bells are processed leaving their echoes suspended in space, while voices and noises overlap. "Rain" captures bird songs, crickets and other insects and the sound of the rain.

Spence shows his sensitivity for the environments in which he lives or has lived, through rough and soft layers weaving intriguing and mysterious soundscapes.
