Este un nuevo lanzamiento en la Serie de Arte Sonoro del sello alemán Gruenrekorder. Se trata de un trabajo del compositor y artista sonoro alemán, Matthias Engelke, quien interpreta las canciones del compositor renacentista John Dowland.

Engelke compone música para teatro con dispositivos electrónicos análogos en donde se da la interacción entre la música, sonido, danza y movimiento.

El canto del tenor mantiene el encanto romántico renacentista y el carácter melancólico de la canciones de Dowland. En tanto los arreglos electrónicos fluyen y tejen una simbiosis perfecta entre dos mundos y épocas diferentes. Y aquí podemos ver qué tan complementarias  pueden ser.  Por ejemplo, las pulsaciones rítmicas en “White as lilies was her face” acompañan perfectamente su talante lúdico. En “The lowest trees have tops” los arreglos en cuerdas le dan un aura ceremonial a una canción nostágica.  

“Lady if you so spite me” por momentos se acerca a un track de IDM con sus emergentes beats, mientras el cantante convive en un espacio distinto, como si estuviera en una dimensión paralela.

Esta dimensión paralela y complementaria en el papel quizás cuesta de imaginar, sin embargo las texturas que se producen entre el canto renancentista y la electrónica actual, permiten lograr una experiencia sonora sorprendente.

This is a new release in the Sound Art Series on the German label Gruenrekorder. This is a work of German composer and sound artist, Matthias Engelke, who performs the songs of Renaissance composer John Dowland.

Engelke composes music for theater with analog electronic devices where music, sound, dance and movement interact.

Tenor singer hold the romantic Renaissance charm and brooding character of Dowland's songs. As the electronic arrangements flow and weave a perfect symbiosis between two different worlds and different times. And here we can see how complementary they can be. For example, the rhythmic beats in “White as lilies was her face” perfectly match his playful nature. On "The lowest trees have tops" the string arrangements give a ceremonial aura to a nostalgic song.

"Lady if you so spite me" at times approaches the IDM genre with its emerging beats, while the singer coexists in a different space, as if he were in a parallel dimension.

This parallel and complementary dimension on paper is perhaps difficult to imagine, however the textures that occur between Renaissance song and current electronics allow for a surprising sound experience.
