Mike Cooper es un experimentado guitarrista de folk de avanzada cuya extensa discografía data de 1969 y que alcanza a casi 80 discos. Folk, exotica y ambient son algunos de los estilos que cultiva este músico viajero y trotamundos incansable e inventor de sus propias “guitarras”. En “Tropical Gothic” el más reciente disco de Cooper publicado en Discrepant hace gala de las experimentaciones que hace con sus “guitarras”, junto a grabaciones de campo y cuyo contendo evoca al hecho de que las potencias coloniales europeas lucharon intensamente "contra las poblaciones indígenas (del sudeste asiático) y entre sí por el control de la tierra y los recursos", que viene a representar lo oscuro, lo gótico. Folk, exotic and ambient are some of the styles cultivated by this traveler musician and tireless globetrotter and creator of his own "guitars". On "Tropical Gothic" Cooper's most recent album released on Discrepant shows off the experimentations he does with his "guitars", along with field recordings and whose content conjure-up the fact that European colonial powers fought intensely "against the indigenous population (from Southeast Asia) and each other for the control of land and resources" which represent the dark, the gothic. Entiendo que tienes una colección de guitarras de diferentes partes del mundo. ¿Qué criterios utilizaste para elegir el sonido de guitarra para el álbum "Tropical Gothic"? "No hay ningún 'criterio' en absoluto. Tiendo a usar las mismas guitarras la mayor parte del tiempo para grabar o tocar en vivo. De hecho en ‘Tropical Gothic’ no hay mucha guitarra. ‘Running Naked’ se toca en mi National Electric Lap Steel y en el resto de los temas del disco utilizo un instrumento hecho por mí llamado La'ap. Es sólo una pieza de madera con cinco cuerdas y un pick up". ¿Tienes algún tipo de grabaciones de campo que te interesen más? ¿Cuál fue la fuente de inspiración para componer "Tropical Gothic"? "La fuente de inspiración para 'Tropical Gothic' es muy compleja. Viene de las dos palabras 'tropical' y 'gótico'. La historia actual del colonialismo es una historia de tragedia - un cuento gótico - y me inspiré en muchas fuentes incluyendo escritores como Robert Louis Stevenson y Louis Becke y cineastas como FW Murnau, Lav Diaz y Kaneto Shindo. He tocado música en vivo para proyecciones de películas mudas durante muchos años y elegí para este disco centrarme en la película ‘Onibaba’ de Kaneto Shindo, el filme de Henry de Falaise, ‘Legong-Dance of The Virgin’ y una película documental sobre el ritual en la vida cotidiana en Bali llamada ‘Gods Of Bali’". ¿Con qué te identificas más? ¿Cómo viajero, músico o músico ambulante? What criteria did you use to choose the guitar sound for "Tropical Gothic" album? "No 'criterior' at all really. I tend to use the same guitars most of the time for recording or live gigs. On Tropical Gothic there isn't much guitar in fact. Running Naked is played on my National electric lap steel and the rest is on a homemade instrument called a La'ap that I made. It’s just a piece of wood with five strings and a pick up." Do you have any kind of field recordings that interest you most? What was the source of inspiration for composing "Tropical Gothic"? "The source of inspiration for 'Tropical Gothic' is very complex. It comes from the two words 'tropical' and 'gothic'. The ongoing story of colonialism is a story of tragedy - a gothic tale - and I drew inspiration from many sources including writers like Robert Louis Stevenson and Louis Becke and film makers such as FW Murnau, Lav Diaz and Kaneto Shindo. I have performed live music for screenings of silent films for many years and I chose to focus on Kaneto Shindo's film ‘Onibaba’ and Henry de Falaise film ‘Legong-Dance of The Virgin’ and a documentary film about ritual in everyday life in Bali called ‘Gods Of Bali’ for this record." With what do you identify most? As a traveler, a musician or a traveling musician? "Like most musicians I have to travel to play but I enjoy both. I am a traveller and musician and one complement the other and sometimes playing helps to pay for the travel...but not always." Do you combine your music with other art forms? "I am a visual artist and I make video and sometimes installations. I made a 45-minute video to accompany the live presentation of Tropical Gothic at Cafe Oto in London recently. I also made the promo video for the album called ‘Ko Lanta’ that you can see on YouTube. I have an on-going video project called ‘Island Gardens’ which I have been making for several years all shot on islands that I have visited around the world. It is in 9 parts and originally, I made it so that it could be downloaded easily on to mobile phones via Bluetooth in an installation.
