El fenómeno de la música electrónica de baile en la Africa Oriental ha crecido con fuerza con la creación de una escena con sede en Kampala, Uganda y que incluye sellos como Nyege Nyege Tapes, Hakuna Kulala y artistas como Nakibembe Embaire Group, Authentically Plastic y Titi Bakorta, entre otros. Además, cuenta con una agencia de booking, un club y un festival que organiza el colectivo Nyege Nyege y que en este año se realiza su octava edición.

Faizal Mostrixx es un productor, bailarín, coreógrafo y artista de música electrónica que despliega una  amplia paleta de percusión de poliritmos que proviene de la trdición ugandesa, amapiano (el amapiano africano es un subgénero de la música house), sintetizadores, pesadas líneas de bajo y cantos ceremoniales de la cuenca del Nilo y grabaciones de campo africanas. 

A este fenómeno musical se le denomina Afrofuturismo que según Mostrixx significa “El Afrofuturismo es una forma de describir el encuentro entre lo electrónico y lo tribal. Se trata de traer el pasado al presente e imaginar cómo podría expresarse en el futuro”.

Este es el segundo álbum de Mostrixx, en cuya apertura, “Onions and Love”, emerge la maravillosa voz de Kebenesh, una señora que pica cebolla en un restautant y que Mostrixx grabó en un estudio casero. En “Loosely” se presenta a la cantante lesothiana Morena Leraba, además de cánticos del cantante, compositor y multiinstrumentista ugandés Giovanni Kiyingi.

“Back to Tanzania” y “Passing Through” ofrecen ritmos más ralentizados, mientras que en “SandMan” los poliritmos de la caja de ritmos son incesantes y cautivadores, así como se muestra en “Mutations” con beats entrecortados. “Muzukulu” es una pieza de baile que evoca los ritmos tribales, en tanto que “Afro Aliens” - que cierra el álbum – tiene un pegadizo beat con guiños al techno.

Faizal Mostrixx tiene el convencimiento que el Afrofuturismo es una fuente inspiradora con la que permanentemente busca la transformación, el cambio, las nuevas propuestas, que en su caso, derivan de la rica herencia de la tradición ugandesa y la deriva electrónica.

The electronic dance music phenomenon in East Africa has grown strongly with the creation of a scene based in Kampala, Uganda that includes labels such as Nyege Nyege Tapes, Hakuna Kulala and artists in the likes of Nakibembe Embaire Group, Authentically Plastic and Titi Bakorta, among others. In addition, it has a booking agency, a club and a festival organized by the Nyege Nyege collective that this year is in its eighth edition.

Faizal Mostrixx is an electronic music producer, dancer, choreographer and artist displaying a broad percussion palette of polyrhythms that comes from the Ugandan tradition, Amapiano (African Amapiano's style is a subgenre of house music), synthesizers, heavy bass lines, and ceremonial chants from the basin Nile and African field recordings.

This musical phenomenon is called Afrofuturism, which according to Mostrixx means “Afrofuturism is a way to describe the meeting of the electronic and the tribal. It’s about bringing the past into the now and then imagining how it could be expressed in the future.” 

This is the second Mostrixx album, in whose opening, “Onions and Love”, emerges the mesmerizing vocals of Kebenesh, a lady who chops onions in a restaurant and that Mostrixx recorded in an impromptu studio. On “Loosely” features Lesothian singer Morena Leraba, as well as songs by Ugandan singer -songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Giovanni Kiyingi.

“Back to Tanzania” and “Passing Through” offer slower rhythms, while on “SandMan” the drum machine polyrhythms are relentless and captivating, as shown on “Mutations” with its choppy beats.

"Muzukulu" is a dance piece that conjure up the tribal rhythms, whereas "Afro Aliens" - which closes the album - has a catchy beat with nods to techno.

Faizal Mostrixx is convinced that Afrofuturism is an inspiring source with which he permanently seeks transformation, change, and new proposals, which in his case, derive from the rich heritage of the Ugandan tradition and the electronic drift.
