Este es el volumen II de la serie 7K! “Layers” que lanza el sello de Berlín 7K! con 21 artistas que provienen de 12 países diferentes, desde Bios Contrast con sede en la India, hasta Marko Nyberg de Finlandia, así como Joseph Kamaru (también conocido como KMRU) nacido en Nairobi y Paolo Angeli de Italia. Todos los artistas componen piezas dedicadas al ambient.

Esta etiqueta es reconocida por difundir estos estilos musicales y para ello promueve a importantes exponentes como Simon Goff, Laura Masotto, Echo Collectiv, entre otros. Recientemente 7K! Records lanzó los discos de los compositores de neo-clásico, Vetle Nærø y Niklas Paschburg. Así también 7K! abarca el Proyecto Plunderphonia que invita a los artistas a crear nuevas composiciones a partir de fragmentos de composición clásica existente.

De este compilado conozco a algunos artistas como Tomat, Loscil, Dienne Bogaerts (aka Dienne). Lo abre KMRU con “Or even forever” con capas de teclados, silbidos y registros de campo. Olec Mun con “Unmani” despliega un sintetizador planeador que evoca la música Kosmische alemana. “Chant22” de Jacaszek ofrece atmósferas enrarecidas y samples de una batería jazzística. Loscil con su track “Two Chambers” muestra una melodía melancólica con bordes levemente ruidosos. En tanto el italiano Tomat produce ritmos retorcidos y una línea ambiental oblicua y espectral que JoyCut continúa en “C-Kdaster”. “Cubenx con su canción “Hiking to Playa Malpaso” muestra un pop onírico, mientras las influencias orientales son notables en “Iride” de Earth Begins x Stead x Gommarosa que muestra un ambiente distendido y un aire elegante. Jonsjooel con “Sand_Brother” tiene cierto dramatismo, tanto a través de las voces emergentes in crescendo y ritmos palpitantes, como del piano retorcido y moribundo. Dienne Bogaerts con “_APCF_” combina instrumentos de viento y de cuerdas clásicos, junto a sonidos digitales abstractos. Bios Contrast y su composición “The Fog Of War” muestra frases de piano procesadas y melodías indias, configurando un drone que hacia el final del track es triturado hasta pulverizarse. Sundrugs con “Rapids” muestra una música expansiva y apabullante e Inlet Industry que cierra este compilatorio con “OSS”, despliega un track de pulsos rítmicos solapados y un sintetizador de notas sinuosas y una línea de bajo palpitante. 

“Ambient Layers Vol. II” entrega una mirada amplia de los distintos derroteros que ha tenido el ambient en lo que va de este siglo.

This is volume 2 of the 7K series! “Layers” launched by the Berlin label 7K!, featuring 21 artists hailing from 12 different countries, from India-based Bios Contrast to Finland's Marko Nyberg, as well as Nairobi-born Joseph Kamaru (aka KMRU) and Italy's Paolo Angeli. All of them composed pieces dedicated to ambient.

The label is well-known by spreading these musical styles and for this it promotes a roster of artists such as Simon Goff, Laura Masotto, Echo Collectiv, among others. 7K! Records recently released records by neo-classical composers Vetle Nærø and Niklas Paschburg. 7K! it also encompasses the Plunderphonia Project which invites artists to create new compositions from fragments of existing classical composition.

I already listened to some the artists of this compilation like Tomat, Loscil, Dienne Bogaerts (aka Dienne). KMRU opens it with “Or even forever” with layers of keyboards, whistles and field registers. Olec Mun with “Unmani” deploys a gliding synthesizer that evokes the German Kosmische. Jacaszek's “Chant22” offers rarefied atmospheres and samples of jazzy drums. Loscil with his track “Two Chambers” displays a melancholic melody with slightly noisy edges. Italian Tomat produces twisted rhythms and an oblique, spectral ambient line that JoyCut continues that line with “C-Kdaster”. “Cubenx with his song “Hiking to Playa Malpaso” shows a dreamlike pop, while oriental influences are notable in “Iride” by Earth Begins x Stead x Gommarosa that shows a relaxed atmosphere and an elegant air. Jonsjooel's “Sand_Brother” has a certain drama, both through the rising vocals in crescendo and pounding rhythms, and through that twisted and dying piano. Dienne Bogaerts with _APCF_ combines classical wind and string instruments, along with abstract digital sounds. Bios Contrast and his composition “The Fog Of War” shows processed piano phrases and Indian melodies, configuring a drone that towards the end of the track is crushed until pulverized. Sundrugs on “Rapids” showcase an expansive and overwhelming music and Inlet Industry that closes this compilation with “OSS”, offers a track of overlapping rhythmic pulses, sinuous synth notes and a throbbing bass line.

"Ambient Layers Vol. II" provides a broad view of the different paths that ambient has taken so far this century.
