A comienzos de los ’80, el compositor belga Dirk Serries – guitarra eléctrica y efectos - comienza a trabajar en la escena industrial con el apodo de Vidna Obmana con el que editó más de 140 discos en solitario y en colaboración con otros artistas como Steve Roach, San Rosenthal, David Lee Myers, Asmus Tietchens, Steven R. Smith, Aidan Baker, Celer, Scatterwound, por nombrar algunos. Serries dejó en pausa Vidna Obmana en 2005, en tanto que también tenía otros proyectos como The Fear Falls Burning y Microphonics, este último sigue estando activo. Además de tocar junto a numerosas bandas. Entre tanto creó varios sellos, entre ellos, Mechanical Orchestration Music en el editaba la música de Vidna Obmana. Así también Serries ha tenido en los últimos años un gran interés por el free-jazz, creando para ello la etiqueta A New Wave Of Jazz.

“Fluctuation Of Being” es el primer álbum en solitario de Dirk Serries, desde su último disco en solitario “Epitaph” (2018). En su reciente álbum toca guitarra eléctrica y efectos, creando un fino y delicado ambient. Los largos drones de guitarra emergen lentamente en su apertura con “Nothingness” que flota en un mar de tonalidades edificantes que se sienten muy conmovedoras. “The Fluctuation” se sumerge en una ola de sesiones de cuerdas con influencias neoclásicas, en tanto “Confinement” se mueve sigilosamente expandiendo los efectos deslizantes de la guitarra. Me imagino a Serries con un arco frotando la guitarra y sacando diferentes capas ambientales. Las sublimes melodías de “Despairing Object” me evocan a las guitarras y ambientes que crea Stars Of The Lid, donde lo solemne y la sobriedad van de la mano, junto a bellos paisajes sonoros.

“Impasse” cierra uno de los mejores álbumes ambient de este año y por qué no, de hace mucho tiempo.

In the early 80s the Belgian composer Dirk Serries began to work on the industrial scene under the moniker Vidna Obmana, with which released more than 140 releases, solo and in collaboration with other artists, such as Steve Roach, Saint Rosenthal, David Lee Myers, Asmus Tietchens, Steven R. Smith, Aidan Baker, Celer, Scatterwound to name a few. Serries put Vidna Obmana on hiatus in 2005, while he also had other projects such as The Fear Falls Burning and Microphonics, the latter is still active. In addition to playing with several bands. Whereas he created some labels, like Mechanical Orchestration Music in which he released Vidna Obmana’s music. Likewise, Serries has had a great interest in free-jazz in recent years, creating the A New Wave Of Jazz label for this purpose.

“Fluctuation Of Being” is the first solo album by Dirk Serries, since his last solo album “Epitaph” (2018). In his latest album he plays electric guitar and effects creating a fine and delicate ambient. Long guitar drones slowly emerge in its opening with “Nothingness” floating on a sea of uplifting tonalities that feel very poignant. “The Fluctuation” plunges into a wave of string session-like neo-classical-inflected, while “Confinement” moves stealthily expanding the sliding guitar effects. I envision Serries with a bow strumming the guitar and bringing out different ambient layers. The sublime melodies of “Despairing Object” evoke the guitars and atmospheres of Stars Of The Lid, where solemnity and sobriety go hand in hand, along with mesmerizing soundscapes.

“Impasse” closes one of the best ambient albums of the year and why not, from a long time ago.
