Fatima Al Qadiri es una compositora y artista conceptual, nacida en Senegal y criada en Kuwait, actualmente radicada en Berlín, quien tiene cinco álbumes a su haber, este es el cuarto para Hyperdub, sello de propiedad del músico y productor electrónico, Kode9. 

En el mundo árabe hay prodigiosos músicos de electrónica experimental como es Charbel Haber en Beirut, 3Phaz en El Cairo y nuestra protagonista Fatima Al Qadiri, quien está a cargo de los teclados en este disco y que trabaja junto al vocalista kuwaití Gumar. 

Las cuatro canciones que incluye este disco trata el tema del amor no correspondido, posiblemente el tema más común de la música árabe de ayer y de hoy, y quizás también, en el mundo occidental.

Adentrarse en la música de “Gumar” es sumergirse en el canto de lamentación con el que crecieron tanto Fátima como Gumar y en el que Gumar se formó formalmente cuando era adolescente. Este canto voluptuoso, cuya caja de resonancia se cuela por todos los vericuetos creando paisajes expansivos, junto a pads de sintetizador ambientales y de bordes oscuros como lo muestra “Gumar” que abre este disco. Una canción dedicada a la luna: “Oh Luna, Oh Luna, ¿Dónde? Oh Luna, Oh Luna, ¿Dónde estás?”. Le sigue “Fidetik (I Lay Down My Life For You), la canción más oscura del álbum; los bloques de cemento caen en la profundidad dejando una estela de ecos. La palabra Fidetik se repite como un mantra y es la declaración que le hace un miembro de la tribu a su jefe, o un amigo(a) a otro amigo(a), un amante a su amado, etc. La repetición se transforma en una suerte de lamento y trance devocional. “Mojik (Your Waves)” se siente emocionante, la potente de Gumar revolotea por los aires, girando en un espiral con ecos interminables, mientras serpentean sinuosas notas sintéticas. Esta canción, “es una oda para ahogar. Tus olas, tus olas me han matado, oh mar”. 

El canto desgarrador de Gumar se combina con las notas zigzagueantes del sintetizador.

“Meriem” posee esa atmósfera intrigante pero al mismo tiempo cautivante que atrapa a los oyente en sus redes. Los teclados sombríos crean una atmósfera cargada de lamentaciones. Esta es la típica canción que rompe corazones. “¿Cómo? Cómo me dejaste, Meriem”. 

“Gumar” es el canto desgarrador de canciones que evocan el lamento y que están lejos del romanticismo, pero que se sienten muy conmovedoras.

Fatima Al Qadiri is a composer and conceptual artist, born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait, currently based in Berlin, who has five albums released, this being her fourth for the London based Hyperdub label owned by electronic musician and producer, Kode9.

In the Arab world there are renown experimental electronic musicians such as Charbel Haber in Beirut, 3Phaz in Cairo and our protagonist Fatima Al Qadiri, who plays the keyboards on this album and who works together with the Kuwaiti vocalist Gumar.

The four songs on this album deal with the theme of unrequited love, possibly the most common theme in Arabic music of yesterday and today, and perhaps also in the Western world.

To delve into the music of “Gumar” is to immerse yourself in the lament song that both Fatima and Gumar grew up with and in which Gumar was formally trained as a teenager. This voluptuous song, whose sound box slides through all the intricacies creating expansive landscapes, together with ambient synthesizer pads with dark edges, as shown on "Gumar" that opens this album. A song dedicated to the moon: “Oh Moon, Oh Moon, Where? Oh Moon, Oh Moon, Where Are You?”

It is followed by “Fidetik (I Lay Down My Life For You), the darkest song on the album; the cement blocks fall into the depths, leaving a trail of echoes. The word Fidetik is repeated like a mantra and is the declaration that a member of the tribe makes to his chief, or a friend to another friend, a lover to his beloved, etc. The repetition becomes a kind of lamentation and devotional trance. “Mojik (Your Waves)” feels exciting, Gumar's potent flutters through the air, spiraling with endless vibrations, meandering sinuous synthetic notes. This song is about: “An ode to drowning Your Waves, Your Waves Have Killed Me Oh Sea”.

Gumar's heartbreaking singing is combined with the zigzagging of the synth notes. “Meriem”, the closing track, has that intriguing but at the same time captivating atmosphere that traps the listener in their webs. The song lyrics are just as “How? How Did You Leave Me? Meriem.”

“Gumar” is a heartbreaking songs conjure up lamentation and are far from romantic, yet feel very poignnt.
