Ben McElroy & A Spot on the Hill | "Everything Was Different Yesterday" | The Slow Music Movement | 2023

Marzo 2023

Hailing from the seaside town of West Kirby on The Wirral, Ben McElroy, multi-instrumentalist and composer is currently based in Nottingham, UK. He has released several albums and EPs on labels like The Slow Music Movement, Whitelabrecs, as well as self-released records. He started making music self-taught and later studied music technology at Clarendon College in Nottingham, with which he gives new textures to his music.

Dan Cook aka A Spot on the Hill begins to create music from his teens, playing in the high school orchestra, a string quartet, a punk band, two indie rock bands, and a stint as editor of music in an alternative newsweekly. He then started his solo career releasing minimalist and meditative instrumental albums.

Both musicians have a special interest in neo-classical, minimalist, ambient and folk music.

The starting point of this album was in December 2021 when Dan Cook from A Spot on the Hill wrote to Ben McElroy proposing a collaboration, so in early 2022 they began exchanging sound files.

This album comprising 10 delicately sculpted songs, opens with “Pardon the Garden”, with a neat piano and a session of strings that unfolds with ease. The nostalgic piano notes and the violin dialogue mesh like a music box. “The Wilder We Became” proposes a more somber and haunting atmosphere, while “Waltz for an Imagined Past” with a meandering solo of clarinet fills the space. “Moving to the Mountains” feels poignant languishing in sadness. "Fog Hangs Low This Morning" has a folk tune, whereas "Where the Birds Still Sing" showcase the cawing of seagulls and an electronic vibrating noise unfurls. The song that gives the album’s title, has a sober mood along with field recordings, and "A New Light", is a gorgeous song that closes an emotional and reflective album, both intimate and airy.
