Kit Grill es un músico residente en Londres y DJ en la NTS Radio en el que difunde música de todo el mundo, combinando distintos géneros musicales y épocas. Este programa le permite conocer un amplio espectro de la música. Kit Grill también se desarrolla en el campo de la fotografía, la pintura y el video, además de llevar su propio sello Primary Colours. Nuestro protagonista escribe y produce en los estilos synth-pop y ambient, dos estilos diferentes y que reflejan dos facetas, una más orientada al beat y la otra más meditativa. This radio show allows Kit Grill to know a wide range of music. Kit Grill also develops in the fields of photography, painting and video, as well as running his own Primary Colors label. Our protagonist writes and produces in synth-pop and ambient styles, two different styles that reflect two aspects of him, one more beat-oriented and the other more meditative. Cuéntanos sobre la radio NTS. Entiendo que transmite todo tipo de música de todo el mundo. En particular, ¿cuál es el propósito de su programa de radio mensual? “El propósito de mi programa es seleccionar una amplia gama de música que me inspire a través de diferentes géneros, épocas y producciones. Estoy interesado en una gama de sonidos, y mi objetivo es crear un flujo a lo largo del espectáculo donde los géneros se mezclan entre sí a través de su estilo, por ejemplo, una pista ambiental puede combinarse muy bien con una pista pop que luego funcionará con algo de música soul de los ‘70, por el uso de cuerdas, percusión... encontrando un nexo entre canciones. NTS es una piedra angular para la música y estoy muy agradecido por el programa, ya que me da una gran razón para buscar música nueva y antigua”. Respecto a tu disco "Spirit" (2022), de corte ambient, comentas que “El objetivo era hacer un disco completamente diferente a “Fragile”, algo mucho más lento y abierto. Quería tener una distinción real entre los dos discos y producirlos al mismo tiempo ayudó a crear esta diferencia en el sonido y el ritmo". Para tu creación musical, ¿cómo te ayuda a hacer estos cambios en el sonido y el ritmo? “Aunque estos álbumes son musicalmente diferentes, se hicieron durante el mismo período de tiempo. Tener un ‘concepto’ para cada registro hizo que fuera más fácil concentrarse en hacer una separación clara entre los dos. Ambos álbumes reflejan una parte diferente de mí”. “‘Fragile’ se hizo como una respuesta al movimiento y el ritmo, inspirado por producir el ritmo de vida que se vive en una ciudad, el agotamiento, la diversión y traer eso a la música. Sin embargo, 'Spirit' es tranquilo y meditativo y está destinado a ocupar ese espacio. Trato de meditar cada mañana y mi objetivo es traducir esa sensación de quietud en el sonido.“ ¿Qué motivó tu interés en escribir y producir tu propia música? “El proceso creativo de hacer música es catártico para mí y me ayuda a comunicar cualquier alegría interna, dolor, pena, dicha, amor, etc. El estímulo proviene de explorar las infinitas posibilidades del sonido, inspirarse en otros artistas y un deseo interno de seguir creando”. Me da la impresión de que muchos estilos musicales aún perduran hoy en día, a pesar de que surgieron hace años en el Reino Unido. Por ejemplo, post-punk y synth-wave. ¿Qué puedes decirnos sobre esto? “Aunque los estilos musicales se originaron en diferentes épocas, el sonido y la producción todavía resuenan hoy con nuevas audiencias. Creo que los artistas/productores naturalmente disfrutan escuchando música nueva y eso involucra mucho especialmente cuando esta música ha sido producida antes de nuestro tiempo. La gente seguirá descubriendo música antigua (ya sea disco, techno, clásica, pop) y los inspirará a hacer algo nuevo hoy”. ¿Puedes contarnos de tus próximos proyectos? “Actualmente, estoy completando un álbum que presenta mi voz que se lanzará este año. Es una colección de doce pistas inspiradas en mi experiencia personal que tiene una narrativa que espero resuene en los oyentes”. Guillermo Escudero Marzo 2023		Please tell us about NTS radio. I understand that it broadcasts all kinds of music from around the world. In particular, what is the purpose of your monthly radio show? “The purpose of my show is to select a broad range of music that inspires me across different genres, eras, and productions. I am interested in a range of sounds, and aim to create a flow throughout the show where genres bleed into each other through their style, for example an ambient track may blend nicely into a pop track that will then work with some soul music from the 70s, because of the use of strings, percussion...finding a link between songs. NTS is a cornerstone for music, and I am very grateful for the show as it gives me a great reason to seek out new / old music.” Regarding your album "Spirit" (2022), which is in an ambient vein, you comment that “The aim was to write an album completely different to 'Fragile', something much slower and open. I wanted to have a real distinction between the two records and producing them at the same time helped create this difference in sound and pace." For your musical creation how does it help you in making these changes to the sound and the pace? “Although these albums are musically different, they were made during the same period of time. Having a ‘concept’ for each record made it easier to concentrate on making a distinct separation between the two. Both albums reflect a different part of me.” “‘Fragile’ was made as a response to movement and pace, inspired by running, the pace of life living in a city, exhaustion, fun and bringing that into the music. ‘Spirit’ however, is calm and meditative and is intended to occupy this space. I try to meditate each morning and I aim to translate that sense of stillness into the sound.“ What encouraged your interest in writing and producing your own music? “The creative process of making music is cathartic for me and helps communicate any internal joy, pain, grief, bliss, love and so forth. Encouragement comes from exploring the endless possibilities of sound, being inspired by other artists and an inner desire to keep creating.” I get the impression that many musical styles still endure today, despite the fact that they emerged years ago in the UK. For example, post-punk and synth-wave. What can you tell us about this? “Although musical styles originated in different times, the sound and production still resonate today with new audiences. I think artists / producers naturally enjoy hearing new music and that involves so much that’s been made before our time. People will keep discovering old music (be it disco, techno, classical, pop) and it will inspire them to make something new today.” Can you tell us about your upcoming projects? “Currently, I am completing an album that features my vocals that will be released this year. It’s a collection of twelve tracks inspired by personal experience which creates a narrative that I hope will resonate with listeners.” Guillermo Escudero March 2023
