Charbel Haber | “A Common Misunderstanding Of The Speed Of Light” | Other People | 2022

Charbel Haber | “A Common Misunderstanding Of The Speed Of Light” | Other People | 2022

“I was convinced that an atom of your love could keep me going” continua como una atmósfera inquietante cuyos loops despliegan sostenidas notas sintetizadas. “Sometimes a day can last a lifetime” crea texturas electrónicas entrecortadas incluyendo glitches que construye con la guitarra.

The special series of books published by the New York imprint Other People continues with “A Common Misunderstanding Of The Speed Of Light”, a multimedia book that spans from 2020 to early 2022, about the consequences of the Beirut explosions, including photographs of Charbel Haber, a key figure of the post-punk/experimental scene in Beirut, Lebanon.

Highlighting Haber's interest in decomposition, negative space, and the temporality of the human condition, the 96-page orange (color of explosion fire) hardcover book is accompanied by a six-track CD as a mirror of the six chapters of the book. The photographs show the sky reddish due to the flames of fire, a black fungus of smoke that stains the sky, landscapes, an empty beach, palm trees, thorny cacti, airplanes, helicopters, a roulette wheel, a wire fence, etc. Images that reveal loneliness, emptiness and fear.

The track that opens this digital album "Pedro Paramo on his way to meet the dead" is an amalgamation of guitar and keyboard loops as if it were an organ concert with uplifting melodies. "Pedro Páramo", Mexican Juan Rulfo’s first novel, invites the reader to immerse in a mysterious, lifeless town, which connects with Haber's emotion regarding his view of the conflicted world in which we live. “I was convinced that an atom of your love could keep me going” continues as a disturbing atmosphere whose loops display sustained synthesized notes. “Sometimes a day can last a lifetime” creates choppy electronic textures including glitches that he builds with the guitar. "The tune of Titan 3" the synthesizer notes weave beautiful melodies that exude a ceremonial, almost religious character. In "John Coltrane and John Fahey crossing the Danube" Haber plays the guitar creating crystalline chords, whose musical background is made up of ambient keyboards. And to close this album, "So long lover" the soft chords of the guitar slide subtle and melancholic melodies that evoke the work of Durutti Column.

Charbel Haber skilfully plays the guitar, combining its textures with the images, thus creating disturbing environments, but which are nonetheless a stream of uplifting songs.
