“Nunca subestimes el poder de la radio”, comenta en el comunicado de prensa Catherine Graindorge, compositora, violinista, violista y actriz belga, quien tiene un importante background; ha tocado con Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Debbie Harry y Mark Lannegan, John Parish (PJ Harvey), Chris Eckman (Dirtmusic), Hugo Race (ex miembro de Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), Pascal Humbert y Bertand Cantat (Détroit), Andrea Schroeder, entre otros artistas.
Y claro, sorprendentemente y después de que Iggy Pop tocara dos temas de Graindorge [del álbum “Eldorado”, tak:til, 2021] en su programa de BBC 6 Music, en noviembre pasado, surge el interés de Pop de pedirle a Catherine que le enviara una pista, para lo cual ella empieza a improvisar y de ello salieron tres piezas.
Así nace el EP “The Dictator” que abre con la canción del mismo nombre, cuyas letras fueron escritas por Pop dos meses antes de la invasión rusa a Ucrania”, por lo que comenta: “Mi aporte es informar, a través de las palabras, la amenaza actual y el anhelo de felicidad y paz”. La voz grave y apesadumbraba de Pop se alterna con la presencia de cuerdas edificantes y texturas electrónicas oscuras de Catherine Graindorge.
Graindorge escribió las letras de “Mud I”, una intrigante pieza que se evidencia con los acordes del violín y la viola que crean un diálogo, mientras asoma la voz cavernosa de Pop con su spoken word que dice"... la canción se abre paso entre las nubes por un momento, me habló de viajes, en algún lugar la historia se va contando en mis pasos en el lodo, me acercan al silencio."
“Mud II” fue la respuesta del exvocalista de The Stooges a “Mud I”, escribiendo las letras que hacen referencia a que “la mitad del mundo camina entre naufragios, en el lodo y ahora la larga caminata se acerca… porque siempre sentimos la sombra del mal…” la voz profunda de Pop se vuelve cansina, mientras Catherine Graindorge rasguea las cuerdas del violín y despliega una bella y melancólica melodía. “Mud II” es una de las canciones más conmovedoras de este año.
El EP finaliza con “Iggy”, canción que Catherine Graindorge le dedica y es la única pieza sin la voz del cantante. Su densa atmósfera es inquietante que se nutre de sombrías cuerdas procesadas.
Esta inusitada colaboración muestra cómo dos artistas de distinto background musical y de generaciones distintas, declaran admiración mutua por su música, aportando cuatro gemas musicales que brillarán por mucho tiempo.

And of course, surprisingly, and after Iggy Pop played two Graindorge’s songs [from the album “Eldorado”, tak:til, 2021] on his BBC 6 Music show last November, Pop was interested in asking her to send him a track, for which she begins to improvise and three pieces came out of it.
This is how the EP “The Dictator” was conceived, which opens with the song of the same name, whose lyrics were written by Pop two months before the Russian invasion in Ukraine”, for which he comments: “My contribution is to report, through words, the current threat and the longing for happiness and peace.“ Pop's deep, sorrowful voice alternates Catherine Graindorge’s presence of uplifting strings and dark electronic textures.
Graindorge wrote the lyrics for “Mud I”, an intriguing piece that is evidenced by the violin and viola chords that create a dialogue, while Pop's cavernous voice peeks out with his spoken word that says "... the song breaks through the clouds for a moment, it talked to me about travels, somewhere the story is being told, in my steps in the mud, bring me closely to silence."
“Mud II” was the former Stooges vocalist's response to “Mud I”, writing the lyrics that refer to "half the world is walking in wrecks, in the mud and now the long walk is getting closer... because we always felt the shadow of evil..."
Pop's deep voice turns tiresome, while Catherine Graindorge strums the strings of the violin and unfurls a beautiful and melancholic tune. “Mud II” is one of the most moving songs of this year.
The EP ends with “Iggy”, a song that Catherine Graindorge dedicates to him and is the only piece without the singer's voice. Its dense and haunting atmosphere feeds on somber processed strings.
This unusual collaboration shows how two artists from different musical backgrounds and generations declare mutual admiration for their music, contributing four musical gems that will shine for a long time.
