Como cada edición de IIKKI Books, este proyecto incluye un libro y un CD. El primero corresponde al trabajo del fotógrafo y diseñador gráfico belga, Simon Vansteenwinckel y el segundo, es la propuesta musical compuesta entre 2012 y 2013 por el fundador del sello Eilean Rec., IIKKI Books y la discográfica Laaps, Mathias Van Eecloo. La recomendación es que ambos soportes se experimenten por separado.

“Rustine” consiste en improvisaciones y grabaciones en vivo e incluye una selección de todos los temas grabados de una sola vez durante ese período, junto al trabajo fotográfico de Vansteenwinckel. Para la música de este disco Van Eecloo se imaginó que la ejecutaba una banda compuesta por tres músicos en guitarra, bajo, batería y electrónica. En cualquier caso, sino se hubiera imaginado a una banda, Van Eecloo tiene la habilidad de un multi-instrumentista.

No escuchaba música de Van Eecloo desde su proyecto Monolyth & Cobalt, misma época en que se realizaron estas grabaciones, las que destilan una combinación de sonidos acústicos y electrónicos, junto a loops, pulsaciones rítmicas, tonos armónicos y vocalizaciones. 

El álbum abre con “Call We Call”, un seductor synth-wave y cadenciosas baterías programables, mientras que “NeverÅland” sorprende con los acordes de una pequeña guitarra. “Stand By, Light On (sh*t h*t)” tiene un groove atractivo e hipnótico que “Im Laufe” va en la misma vena. En tanto “Le Vagabond Des Silences” mantiene un ambiente vacilante con los punteos a la guitarra eléctrica, mientras que la batería se esparce libremente. “The Old Ladies With The Sleeping Boots” despliega exquisitos impulsos dub junto a baños de teclados ambientales. Cierra este álbum con “The Drift” y sus percusiones sincopadas, aunque el disco no finaliza, pues se incluyen otros seis bonus tracks que parecen improvisaciones en las que se deja notar un sonido más crudo.

Mathias Van Eecloo con esta entrega muestra que sus improvisaciones de hace una década están hoy completamente vigentes.

Like every edition of IIKKI Books, this project includes a book and a CD. The first corresponds to the work of the Belgian photographer and graphic designer Simon Vansteenwinckel and the second is the music proposal composed between 2012 and 2013 by the founder of Eilean Rec. label, IIKKI Books and Laaps record label, Mathias Van Eecloo. The recommendation is that both media be experienced separately.

“Rustine” consists of improvisations and live recordings and includes a selection of all the songs recorded during that period in one-shot, along with Vansteenwinckel's photographic work. For the music on this album, Van Eecloo imagined that would be performed by a band made up of three musicians on guitar, bass, drums and electronics. In any case, if he hadn't envisioned a band, Van Eecloo shows his skilfullness as a multi-instrumentalist.

I hadn't listened to Van Eecloo's music since his Monolyth & Cobalt project, the same period these recordings were made, which distill a combination of acoustic and electronic sounds, with the combination of loops, driven rhythm, harmonic tones and vocalizations.

The album opens with “Call We Call”, a seductive synth-wave and rhythmic drum machine, where as “NeverÅland” strikes by the guitar chords. “Stand By, Light On (sh*t h*t)” has an engaging and hypnotic groove that “Im Laufe” runs in the same vein. While “Le Vagabond Des Silences” maintains a hesitant atmosphere with the riffs on the electric guitar, while the drums spread freely. “The Old Ladies With The Sleeping Boots” unfolds exquisite dub impulses alongside baths of ambient keyboards. Finish the album with “The Drift” and its syncopated percussions, although the album does not end, as six other bonus tracks are included that seem like improvisations in which a rawer sound it is noticeable.

Mathias Van Eecloo with this installment shows that his improvisations from a decade ago are completely in force nowadays.
