William Fowler Collins | "Hallucinating Loss" | Sicksicksick Distro / Western Noir | 2022

William Fowler Collins based in rural New Mexico is a composer, recording artist and performer. He creates cinematic soundscapes, unfolding minimalist music, drones and free improvisation.

In 2004, Collins graduated from Mills College with a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Music and Recording Media.

He works solo and collaborates with other musicians. He is currently working on a new project with Margarida Garcia and recently co-founded the group, Summer of Seventeen, alongside Aaron Turner (SUMAC, Isis), Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer), Monika Khot (Nordra), and Daniel Menche. Collins has released several albums since 2008 and has side projects: Thalassa with Aaron Turner and Mesa Ritual with Raven Chacón. He has also collaborated with Marshall Trammell and James Jackson Toth.

In this album participle Johanna Hedva, voice, Aaron Martin, cello; María Valentina Chirico, voice and harmonium; Heather Trost on violin and viola and Jeremy Barnes, percussion.

This album starts with “Opening Scene” in a disturbing, heavy, dense environment, which is deepened by the distorted drone of Collins' guitar. It is followed by “Death Acquires A Different Meaning”, in which a cello emerges with a sustained tone, while Johanna Hedva begins to vocalize, reaching both high and low registers as if she were speaking in a mysterious language, evoking the cavernous voice of Diamanda Galás. Dirty, throbbing electronic textures hint at a weary, exhausted beat. “Interpreting Nightmares” with its dark bursts of noise that expand and recede is the prelude to “Return Visit” with a strong gothic accent that is close to the dark folk of Current 93 or Michael Cashmore. In “Preliminal Rites” the string session is combined with ambient keyboards, creating a somber atmosphere, in which heavenly choirs burst forth. And finally, “Hallucinating Loss”, which gives the title to this album, is an amalgamation of ambient synthesizer baths and beautiful strings that offer harmonic tones.

This album penetrates in an immersive environment that goes deep into the soul.
