Australian Jason Sweeny, who lives in Kaurna Country, South Australia, released “Decades (2001-2021)”, his fourth album on the Greek label Sound In Silence, after his albums ‘Disappearing Music For Face’ (2016), ‘Quiet Ecology’ (2017) and ‘Five Pianos’ (2020).
Jason Sweeny also works under the alias of Sweeny, delivering fine avant-pop on two albums released on this label.
This 70-minute, 31-track compilation, eighth album as Panoptique Electrical, covers 20 years of his work including ambient pieces, experimental scores and soundtracks. Zoë Barry plays cello as a frequent collaborator on cello and on vocal cut-up Caroline Daish.
The first tracks are from around 2001 and showcase more raw and dusty textures incorporating micro noises, along with blurring atmospheres. As we move towards the half of the record, we start to notice clean ambient lines with a Neo-Classical influence and cinematic settings. In ‘The Whisper in Your Head’ we can notice Caroline Daish's vocal cut-ups that reveal an indecipherable monologue. While in “The Argument” piano notes intersect with a suffocating loop. ‘Beatrice Alive’ lights up with epic synths, while ‘Spiral Room’ creates a soundscape that evokes celestial images. Rounding off this compilation, ‘A Red Dress, A Knife (for Ania Walwiz)’ dedicated to the poetess Ania Walwiz, accompanied by an intriguing atmosphere.
Jason Sweeny unveils his songwriting skills which also leads him to work in other art-forms such as experimental films, curating for galleries and theatre, and composing for leading performing arts companies and organizations.
