Eran los ’90 y la explosión de las raves en Reino Unido ponían a la música de baile en los principales charts, mientras tanto también surgía una interesante y nutrida escena en ciudades como Manchester, Sheffield, Londres y en Bristol, en particular, se encontraban Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation y Crescent convergiendo en Movietone, donde Kate Wright fue su principal cantautora.

"Peel Sessions 1994-1997" fue grabado en los estudios Maida Vale de Londres para el programa de John Peel en la Radio 1 de la BBC, entre 1994-1997. Ninguna de estas sesiones se transmitieron on-line, por lo que sólo pudieron ser escuchadas por quienes sintonizaron en vivo dichas sesiones.

Se incluyen antiguas canciones antiguas y versiones alternativas de sus álbumes Movietone (Planet, 1995/Geographic, 2004), Day and Night (Domino/Drag City, 1997), “The Blossom Filled Streets” (Domino/Drag City, 2000), además de la canción 

Lynda's Strange Vacation' de la era pre-Movietone.

Estas sesiones consisten en tres, la primera fue grabada en 12/05/1994 y transmitida en la radio el 18/06/1994. Aquí se presenta un rock-indie etéreo, con unos pocos acordes de guitarra y efectos wah-wah, donde Kate Wright tanto recita como despliega un canto susurrante y melancólico, que me evoca a los primeros discos de Low. La excepción es la canción “Stone” con guitarras ruidosas con una fuerte dosis de post-punk. La segunda sesión fue grabada en 28/01/1996 y transmitida en radio el 10/02/1996. En ésta el ritmo cansino se alterna con algunos scratches, ruidos electrónicos y los planeadores sonidos del oboe. La sesión tres fue grabada el 31/08/1997 y su transmisión radial fue en 30/09/1997. Aquí el ambiente es acogedor, la voz de Wright emerge suavemente, unas notas de piano se esparcen alrededor, mientras una trompeta balbucea con guiños al jazz. 

Movietone ha sido una influencia importante para varios grupos y artistas como Zelienople, Yellow6, The Humble Bee o Port Royal. Y este compilatorio es particular se destaca por la fina selección de las primeras canciones de esta banda que prevalecerá en el recuerdo.

In the '90s and the explosion of raves in the United Kingdom put dance music on the main charts, meanwhile an interesting and creative scene was also emerging in cities like Manchester, Sheffield, London and in Bristol, in particular, they were Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation and Crescent converging on Movietone, where Kate Wright was their main songwriter.

"Peel Sessions 1994-1997" was recorded at Maida Vale Studios in London for the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1, between 1994-1997. None of these sessions were broadcast online, so they could only be heard by those who tuned live these sessions.

Included are early songs and alternative versions from their albums Movietone (Planet, 1995/Geographic, 2004), Day and Night (Domino/Drag City, 1997), “The Blossom Filled Streets” (Domino/Drag City, 2000), furthermore the song Lynda's Strange Vacation' from the pre-Movietone era.

These sessions consist of three, the first one was recorded on 05/12/1994 and broadcast on the radio on 06/18/1994. Here is an ethereal indie rock, with a few guitar chords and wah-wah effects, where Kate Wright both recites and unfolds a whispery and melancholy song, which reminds me the first records of the band Low. The exception is the song "Stone" with loud guitars with a heavy dose of post-punk. The second session was recorded on 01/28/1996 and broadcast on the radio on 02/10/1996. In this one the tiresome rhythm alternate with some scratches, electronic noises and the oboe gliding sounds. Session three was recorded on 08/31/1997 and was broadcast on the radio on 09/30/1997. Here the atmosphere is cozy, Wright's voice emerges softly, piano notes spread around her, while a trumpet babbles with nods to jazz. 

Movietone has been an important influence for several groups and artists such as Zelienople, Yellow6, The Humble Bee or Port Royal. And this compilation is in  particular, stands out for the fine selection of the first songs of this band that will prevail in the memory.
