Christopher Otto & JACK Quartet | "Rag′sma" | Greyfade | 2021 (06/08)

Christopher Otto is a composer and violinist living in the Bronx, New York. He studied composition at the Eastman School of Music and mathematics at the University of Rochester. Otto is member of the Jack Quartet, one of the world’s premier contemporary string quartets, and on this album, he is accompanied by his fellows: Austin Wulliman on violin, John Pickford Richards, viola, Jay Campbell, cello and Otto himself on violin. Our protagonist has worked with prominent musicians like Helmut Lachenmann, Georg Friedrich Haas, John Luther Adams, Philip Glass, and John Zorn.

This is his first full-length album as a composer for a triple-string quartet written and recorded by the Jack Quartet. Jack is a non-profit performing organization that proposes and spreads the new string quartet music.

Rag′sma combines contemporary classical and experimental music. Otto's mathematical approach is embodied in the composition, however in the artist's own words: “It’s more important that someone finds their own way into it. If they are really curious about how it’s put together mechanically, that’s great. But I wouldn’t want anyone to think that they have to slog through some technical jargon in order to appreciate the piece.”

"rag′sma q1q2q3" is a dialogue between string instruments that overlap each other producing different tones, small silences emerge and hints of melodic notes that contract. At times the string ensemble of A Winged Victory For The Sullen appears to me. In the meantime, “rag′sma q1q2” unfolds lower and sustained tones that expand as a hypnotic drone.

Christopher Otto & JACK Quartet propose an innovative music, impeccable in its execution and above all immersive and penetrating.
