Mark Gergis aka Porest is a post-American musician and producer working for decades on recordings, performances, radio and video productions.
“Cancer in the Soft Breeze” is a collection of field and radio recordings, electroacoustic experiments, using various instruments, such as electric saz, strings, balypso, reeds, synthesizers, and drones. These recordings captured in West Oakland, Germany, Sumatra, Syria, Hanoi and London between 1995 and 2020, were made by Porest and Friends.
This variety of cultures and musicians is embodied in this album through a sound collage that exudes exotic, world music and avant-garde. Although it does not quite fall into those styles since the borders are blurred when Gergis begins to experiment with electronic devices. Sinuous synthetic notes and metallic noises alternated with drones along with ambience and radio recordings, collect bizarre dialogues or excerpts from some provocative film from the 1950s such as the track "One Million Dollars”.
There are also indications of approaches to pop such as the song “(Terlok”) with its suggestive oriental percussion. "Wings of Deception" is a radio recording that seems to have a humorous character, but that changes radically, transforming itself into short wave sounds that later becomes sublime, choppy melodies.
Porest is certainly unpredictable as his narrative is changeable, from abstract layers of noise to bits of dialogue and a collage of stories.
