Opening Performance Orchestra, Bill Laswell & Iggy Pop feat. William S. Burroughs | "The Acid Lands" | Sub Rosa | 2020

“The Acid Lands” presenta fragmentos de las novelas “The Western Lands” y “Junkie”.

“The Acid Lands”, a suggestive title that is well linked to the key figure of the Beat Generation, William S. Burroughs, to whom this work is dedicated. It was performed live for the first time by the Prague-based Opening Performance Orchestra at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Ostrava, in 2014, to commemorate the 100 years since the birth of the North American writer and visual artist.

The studio version of this work was made in late 2019, early 2020 in collaboration with Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, who took on the role of narrator.

"The Acid Lands" features fragments from the novels "The Western Lands" and "Junkie." In addition to the title composition, “The Acid Lands”, the album contains Bill Laswell's instrumental remix, as well as the collective piece Naming Seven Souls, with samples from William S. Burroughs reading his own work.

The music has small variations as long as it is sustained by a melodic line composed of a bass, sinuous synthesizer and a guitar that meanders the space and that is mutating in the three pieces, adding some noise.

In some passages, samples are heard with Burroughs' own voice, which alternate with the narrations of Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, such as the one which refers to the last chance and the terminal phrase emerges “…Let it flow, to you have to be on hell to see heaven…”

The mesmerizing and hypnotic sound is the appropriate context for a dark and enveloping narrative.
