Michael Vincent Waller es un compositor de composición neo clásica y tiene tres álbumes editados, “Trajectories” (Recital, 2017), “The South Shore” (XI, 2015) y su más reciente disco “Moments” publicado por el interesante sello Unseen Worlds.
Waller es un activo artista residente en Nueva York quien define la intuición como la emoción central que envuelve a su nuevo LP “Moments”. Invitando al oyente a que haga su propia interpretación de sus momentos memorables. Pequeñas viñetas musicales se van sucediendo en el disco mientras que la fragilidad y sutileza de las notas de piano despliegan solo belleza.

Michael Vincent Waller is a neo-classical composer who has three albums released, "Trajectories" (Recital, 2017), "The South Shore" (XI, 2015) and his latest album "Moments" published by the amazing Unseen Worlds label.
Waller is an active artist based in New York who defines intuition as the central emotion that surrounds his new LP "Moments".
Inviting the listener to make "one’s" own interpretation of "these" memorable moments. Small musical vignettes are happening on the record while the fragility and subtlety of the piano notes unfold only beauty.

"Moments" se inspiró en memoriales, cumpleaños, fiestas de hogar; amigos, profesores, familiares. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre la nostalgia?
“Esas inspiraciones se derivaron de experiencias personales, representaciones íntimas de cómo estos diversos eventos y personas dieron forma a las trayectorias en mi vida. Creo que es una distinción clave (de la nostalgia), que la composición se basa más claramente en el presente, interactuando directamente con los sentimientos personales. Hay una sensación de reflexión y vigorización de las modalidades que dan vida al trabajo e invita a los oyentes a tener sus propios momentos y sus propias interpretaciones de los recuerdos".
¿Cuál es la emoción detrás de este álbum?
“No estoy seguro de que haya una sola emoción, pero definitivamente hay un sentido común de inmediatez e intimidad. Todo está destinado a sentirse profundamente, a contemplarse plenamente y a desarrollarse orgánicamente. Otra forma de decir eso, sería que la emoción principal del álbum es la intuición. Viñetas en cascada en nuestras miradas internas, reducidas a una vulnerabilidad central. Como artista, anhelo este crudo proceso de ser vulnerable y dejar que eso ayude a que el arte llegue a ti”.
En el comunicado de prensa y cito, "Sin embargo, el corazón emocional de la (tu) música no está en ataque, sino en resonancia". ¿Cuál es la importancia de la resonancia en tu música?
“La resonancia tiene su propia historia. Los contornos y los colores pueden comunicar sutileza, un rico subtexto que crea una forma de comunicación profunda que es realmente inefable. Casi se puede decir más con el sonido de un solo acorde, que una frase completa o una sección de música. Los sobre tonos se pueden formar con una constelación única de tonos, ritmos cuidadosamente medidos y reverenciados con un sonido imbuido en el estilo de interpretación".
¿Hay algún músico / compositor con el que te gustaría colaborar?
"He sido muy afortunado de colaborar con algunos de mis músicos favoritos en el mundo y, además, de reunirme / estudiar con muchos compositores que admiro profundamente. Últimamente he estado trabajando con muchos solistas, así que me gustaría conectarme con más conjuntos / cuartetos de cuerda y orquestas: Bozzini Quartet, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, son algunos ejemplos de grupos. Además, sería genial hacer un programa de música con Harold Budd, o Jlin, un compositor electrónico con el que he estado en conversaciones. A veces son esas colaboraciones inesperadas las que pueden desplegar las más fructíferas oportunidades".
¿Cómo surgió la contribución de Phill Niblock en la fotografía?
“Phill Niblock es una fuerza increíble en la comunidad de Nueva York e inspira a muchas generaciones de artistas. Llevo más de una década yendo a su loft (Experimental Intermedia) para conciertos y eventos. Me animó mucho como compositor, lanzando mi primer LP debut en su sello, XI Records, y contribuyendo con la fotografía en mis tres discos físicos, ‘The South Shore’, ‘Trajectories’, y ahora, ‘Moments’. Su forma de colaborar siempre es muy abierta y fomenta una independencia artística en cómo evoluciona el proyecto. Pero definitivamente sabe lo que quiere, y eso está claro en el tema de las fotos que seleccionamos juntos".

"Moments" was inspired by memorials, birthdays, homecomings; friends, teachers, family members. What’s your opinion about nostalgia?
“These inspirations were derived from personal experiences, intimate portrayals of how these various events and people shaped the trajectories in my life. I think that’s a key distinction (from nostalgia), that the writing is grounded more clearly in the present, directly engaging with personal feelings. There is a sense of reflection and invigoration of modalities that breathes life into the work, and invites the listeners to have their own moments, and interpretation of memories.”
What's the emotion behind this album?
“I am not sure there is a single emotion, but there is a definitely a common sense of immediacy and intimacy. Everything is meant to be felt deeply, to be contemplated fully, and to be developed organically. Another way to say that, would be the primary emotion of the album is intuition. Vignettes cascading into our internal views, stripped-down to a core vulnerability. As an artist, I crave this raw process of being vulnerable, and letting that help the art come to you.”
In the press-release and I quote, "Yet the emotional heart of the (your) music is not in attack, but resonance". Which is the importance of resonance in your music?
“Resonance has its own story. The contours and colors can communicate subtlety, a rich subtext that creates a form of deep communication that is truly ineffable. You can sometimes say more with the ringing of a single chord, that an entire phrase or section of music. Overtones can be formed with unique constellation of pitches, carefully measured rhythms, and reverence with sound imbued in the performance style.”
There's any musician/composer with you would like to collaborate?
“I’ve been very fortunate to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians in the world, and additionally, meeting / studying with many composers that I deeply admire. Lately I have been working with a lot of soloists, so I’d like to connect with more ensembles / string quartets, and orchestras: Bozzini Quartet, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, are some examples of groups. Also, it would be great to do a program of music with Harold Budd, or Jlin, an electronic composer who I have been in dialog with. Sometimes it’s those unexpected collaborations that can unfurl the most fruitful opportunities.”
How did Phill Niblock's contribution in photography come about?
“Phill Niblock is an incredible force in the New York community, and inspires many generations of artists. I having being going to his loft (Experimental Intermedia) for concerts and events for over a decade now. He encouraged me greatly as a composer, releasing my first debut LP on his label, XI Records, and contributing photography on all three of my physical records, ‘The South Shore’, ‘Trajectories’, and now, ‘Moments’. His form of collaboration is always very open, and fostering an artistic independence in how the project evolves. But he definitely knows what he wants, and that is clear in the subject matter of the photos he shared with me to choose from.”
