Intento no “dejarme” involucrar demasiado.
“Amplexus, glamour, The Pretty Things - S.F. "Dolor,
tenis, gritos, Lou Reed, espejos, romance, alcatraces, sombras, eternidad,
a ello".
sensual".

What emotional connections do you have with the pedal steel guitar?
“The
pedal steel guitar mimics and is in tune with the original instrument, the
voice and the voice can reveal the truth of someone whether they like it or
not, so along those lines, the pedal steel guitar is an extension of me and I’m
not ashamed to admit I’m quite an emotional person. There’s something about the
combination of the vibrato, the bending of notes, the sliding, my knees between
the levers, my foot on the pedals, the plucking, the fingering…you can see
where this is going. My personal connection to the instrument is a very
intimate one and I like to let her do the singing, she guides my playing, how I
touch her. I try to not let “me” get too involved. I play by feel, I try not to
think about it.”
Forgive my ignorance, but I think that sliding notes is one of the main
characteristics of the steel guitar pedal sound and that makes it so rich.
What's your opinion about it?
“No
forgiveness necessary. It’s a complicated instrument that I can honestly say holds
many mysteries even after more than 15 years of playing her. Yes, the sliding
is one of the factors that makes the instrument so unique, yet it’s different
than the lap steel guitar that players literally lie flat on their lap (or a
table etc.) and slide. The pedal steel takes it a step further with the
addition of floor pedals and knee levers that change the notes, creating
seemingly infinite combinations of notes and chords. A lot of traditional steel
players also use a volume pedal which creates the swells you hear in country
& western music for example. The nature of the instrument particularly
because of the slide, means you can also swell without the use of a volume
pedal and I often play without one to prevent myself from EASING into the notes
too much, I like to force myself to be sure of my attack.”
What were your sources of inspiration to make the "Throne"
album?
“Amplexus,
glamour, The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow, tennis, hollers, Lou Reed, mirrors,
romance, gannets, shadows, eternity, bitchiness, The High Priestess, jealousy,
delusion and deception.”
I have the impression that "Gold Teeth" goes very deep into
the essence of the human being. What’s your opinion?
“It’s
certainly a song about cycles, eternal recurrence and giving yourself over to
that. When I perform Gold Teeth live, even when I was recording it in the
studio, I lose all sense of time, it feels as if it could be forever, I get
lost in the sway of the piece, abandon myself to its momentum. Maybe as a human
I try to do something
similar in life, abandon myself to it.”
Through your work for the Volcanic Tongue mailorder (formerly a record
shop as well) you must know many bands. Could you name us some new bands that
in your opinion are of your interest?
“It’s
interesting you use the term bands because I actually feel that while there’s a
plethora of remarkable artists creating amazing music right now, I don’t see as
many classic line-up type of bands around like there used to be, maybe that
speaks of people’s isolation from each other or the ease at least in terms of
technology at which people can record and produce music themselves or that it’s
happening more in a bedroom with a computer than with instruments in a garage…I
don’t know…a newish band that I love is Body/Head - the duo of Kim Gordon &
Bill Nace and they have a GROUP sound, not an improv collab sound. To my ears
they’re very bluesy and sexy, it’s sensual music.”
