“Sunder” es el trabajo colaborativo de dos reconocidos músicos del ambient en el que utilizan guitarras acústica y eléctrica, voz, cinta microcassette, grabaciones de campo, sintetizador modular, cuerdas que toca la artista invitada Julie Slater y flauta a cargo de la invitada Shilpi Gupta.
Thomas Meluch, originario de Michigan y ahora afincado en Brooklyn, Nueva York, es un cantautor, multiinstrumentista, escritor y fotógrafo estadounidense, mejor conocido por su alias Benoît Pioulard, con el que ha editado más de 80 discos, entre ellos seis LP’s en el renombrado sello Kranky, Universal, Morr Music, entre otras discográficas. Su más reciente álbum “Eidetic” (Morr, 2023) fue su primer trabajo donde su voz juega un rol preponderante y este año se publicará el tercer LP del proyecto Orcas junto a Rafael Anton Irisarri que lanzará en Dais y Room40.
Jason Corder es un artista multimedia experimental quien vive en Denver, Colorado y que trabaja en el subgénero del ambient. Ha estado activo hace más de 20 años trabajando en los campos de la producción musical, videoarte, software de audio y, ocasionalmente en esculturas sonoras interactivas. Imparte cursos privados sobre música generativa y de vez en cuando da conferencias sobre diversos temas de diseño de sonido en la Universidad de Denver. Sus discos se han lanzado en Home Normal, en el subsello term de 12k, Facture, IIKKI, entre otros sellos. Se ha presentado en Mutek, Decibel, Communikey y otros festivales, compartiendo cartel con artistas como Pole, Matmos, William Basinski por nombrar algunos(as).
En 2018, ambos músicos participaron con un track (“À L’Aise À L’Heure”) en el compilado “Dialog Tapes II” lanzado por Eilean Rec. (sello vinculado a Laaps y a IIKKI).
“Sunder” consiste en ocho piezas que flotan en la deriva contemplativa aunque también inquietante en especial cuando nos enfrentamos a ciertos títulos de canciones como “Desnudo junto al mar / Nota de suicidio”, “Culpa y belleza”, “La niña Jacinta”. Sin embargo, las suaves guitarras cristalinas, las líneas ambientales de sintetizador, las cuerdas trepidantes y el suave zumbido de la flauta, generan un contexto que guarda un equilibrio con el texto de los títulos.
Benoît Pioulard & Offthesky sintonizan perfectamente con el sentido melódico del álbum y sus atmósferas, alcanzando a lo largo del álbum bellos picos épicos.

"Sunder” is the collaborative work of two renowned ambient musicians in which they played electric and acoustic guitar, voice, microcassette tape, field recordings, modular synth, strings by guest artist Julie Slater and flute played by guest artist Shilpi Gupta.
Thomas Meluch, originally from Michigan and now based in Brooklyn, New York, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, writer and photographer, better known by his Benoît Pioulard moniker, with which he has released over 80 albums, including six LPs on the renowned Kranky label, Universal, Morr Music, among other imprints. His most recent album “Eidetic” (Morr, 2023) was his first work where his voice plays a predominant role, and this year will be released on Dais and Room40 the third LP of the Orcas project with Rafael Anton Irisarri.

He teaches private courses on generative music and occasionally lectures on various sound design topics at the University of Denver. He has performed at Mutek, Decibel, Communikey and other festivals, sharing the bill with artists such as Pole, Matmos, William Basinski, to name a few.

“Sunder” consists of eight pieces that hover into a contemplative drift, especially when faced with certain song titles such as “Seaside Nude / Suicide Note,” “Guilt and Beauty,” “Hyacinth Girl.” However, the soft crystalline guitars along with the ambient synth lines, the trembling strings and the soft flute drone, creates a context that is in balance with the text of the titles.
Benoît Pioulard & Offthesky are in perfect harmony with the melodic sense of the album and its atmospheres, reaching beautiful epic peaks throughout the album.
