Paniyolo + Akio Watanabe | “Yanami (The row of houses)” | School Records | 2023

Guitarist Muneki Takasaka aka Paniyolo has released several albums on the Japanese label Schole Records, which is run and curated by pianist and composer Akira Kosemura.

Takasaka, together with steelpan player Akio Watanabe, collaborated on a second album, “Yanami” (The row of houses)”, after their previous “Sora Mo Sukoshi” (“The Row of Houses”) published in 2019.

The guitar chords and the tinkling notes of the steelpan evoke an intimate folk in the shelter of family life that passes quietly, which is reflected in the album cover, which features a Japanese neighborhood. The duo deftly displays the execution of their instruments, creating austere songs, where simplicity is a virtue and neatness, a permanent characteristic in the music of both musicians.

Paniyolo + Akio Watanabe sustain a permanent and fluid dialogue, unfolding a musical bridge, connecting the brightness of the steelpan with the vibrations of the guitar strings.
