“Fauces” es un trabajo colaborativo entre la contrabajista chilena Amanda Irarrázabal y la violinista mexicano-holandesa Miriam den Boer Salmón.
Amanda, junto con tocar el contrabajo, es vocalista, improvisadora y compositora, quien desde el 2008 a 2017 vivió en Buenos Aires Argentina y desde 2018 a 2020 en Ciudad de México. Actualmente reside en Santiago de Chile. En tanto Miriam vive en Ámsterdam.
Miriam den Boer Salmón ha editado discos colaborativos junto a reconocidos improvisadores y compositores como Ernesto Rodrigues, Fredrik Rasten y Guilherme Rodrigues. Por su parte, Amanda Irarrázabal tiene varios discos editados en solitario y en colaboración con otros músicas(os) como “Rayas” (2022), junto a la violinista neoyorquina gabby fluke-mogul, así también tocó junto al renombrado guitarrista y turntablista Otomo Yoshihide y el guitarrista Ramiro Molina, en un concierto en Santiago, en noviembre de 2017, con motivo de la gira del músico japonés por Sudamérica. Su disco “Caudal” (2020) es un referente en el que se puede escuchar su singular forma de cantar; canto sentido, una mezcla de canto-hablado y altos registros vocales.
"Fauces" fue publicado en noviembre pasado en 577 Records, sello de Nueva York que viene produciendo música hace más de 20 años, reuniendo a una interesante camada de artistas de música improvisada y free-jazz.
Cabe destacar que el track "El Bastidor" que se incluye en "Fauces", participó en el compilado “Below the Radar” nº 40 que se editó este año y que viene junto a la revista The Wire.
Sobre su aproximación al contrabajo, Amanda en una entrevista de abril de este año que le realizó el connotado músico y crítico musical Brad E. Rose de la revista on-line Foxy Digitalis, comenta: "Creo que hay mucho en mi forma de tocar proviene de la experiencia práctica que he tenido a lo largo de los años, y de tener el enfoque en desarmar patrones y formas establecidas. Con esto me refiero al acercamiento que tengo al instrumento, la libertad que intento darme para cantar con él, ser base rítmica si quiero, buscar sonoridades más ruidosas, técnicas extendidas, pero que nunca he estudiado… se podría decir que sobre todo a la hora de improvisar, y usar mi instrumento de manera ‘experimental’, soy totalmente autodidacta".
En "Fauces" se nota esa libertad en la que las sonoridades son espontáneas mientras se desarrolla el diálogo entre el contrabajo y el violín. A veces abstracto, sinuoso, otras llano y también inquietante. El silencio se reparte por todo el álbum, mientras se insinúan fonemas y las cuerdas vibrantes del contrabajo sugieren tocar lo profundo. También hay un trabajo percutido; pequeños golpes a la madera del contrabajo, como si se quisiera mostrar algo concreto, junto a un pulso rítmico. Al mismo tiempo el rasgueo áspero del violín deja flotando un chirrido que continúa resonando. Este nuevo álbum muestra un trabajo acústico libre que se desenvuelve con la soltura de la improvisación para crear un arco sonoro lleno de ricos matices y colores.

“Fauces” is a collaborative work between the Chilean double bassist Amanda Irarrázabal and the Mexican-Dutch violinist Miriam den Boer Salmón.
Amanda, along with playing the double bass, is a vocalist, improviser and composer, who from 2008 to 2017 lived in Buenos Aires Argentina and from 2018 to 2020 in Mexico City. She currently resides in Santiago de Chile. Meanwhile Miriam lives in Amsterdam.
Miriam den Boer Salmón has released collaborative records with renowned improvisers and composers such as Ernesto Rodrigues, Fredrik Rasten and Guilherme Rodrigues. For her part, Amanda Irarrázabal has released several albums released alone and in collaboration with other musicians, such as “Rayas” (2022), together with the New York violinist gabby fluke-mogul, as well as the renowned guitarist and turntablist Otomo Yoshihide. and the guitarist Ramiro Molina, at a concert in Santiago, in November 2017, during Yoshihide’s tour in South America. Her album "Caudal" (2020) is a reference in which it can listen her unique way of singing; heartfelt singing, a mixture of spoken word-singing, and soaring vocal lines.
"Fauces" was released in November 2022 on 577 Records, a New York label that has been producing music for more than 20 years, bringing together an interesting roster of free-jazz and improvised music artists.
It should be noted that the track "El Bastidor" that is included in "Fauces", participated in the compilation ‘Below the Radar’ # 40 that was published this year together with The Wire magazine.
Regarding her approach to her double bass, Amanda, in an interview (April 2022) conducted by the renowned musician and music critic Brad E. Rose, of the online magazine Foxy Digitalis, comments: “I think there is a lot in my playing that comes from the practical experience I’ve had over the years, and having the focus on taking apart patterns, and established forms. By this I mean the approach I have to the instrument, the freedom I try to give myself to sing with it, to be a rhythmic base if I want, to look for more noisy sonorities, extended techniques, but that I have never studied… you could say that especially when it comes to improvising, and using my instrument in an ‘experimental’ way, I am totally self-taught.”
In "Fauces" you can see that freedom in which the sounds are spontaneous while the dialogue between the double bass and the violin takes place. Sometimes abstract, sinuous, other times flat and also disquieting. Silence is spread throughout the album, while phonemes insinuate themselves and the vibrating strings of the double bass suggest digs deep. There is also a percussion work; small blows to the wood of the double bass, as if she wanted to show something concrete, alongwith a pulse rhythm. At the same time the rough strumming of the violin leaves a resonating squeal floating. This new album showcases an acoustic work that unfurls with the loose of improvisation to create a sound bow plenty of rich nuances and colors.
