El músico belga Arne Van Petegem aka Styrofoam entre el 2000 y 2010 tiene editado seis álbumes, además de varios EP's y singles en las etiquetas Morr Music de Berlín y Nettwerk. En 2018, el sello griego Sound In Silence publicó su álbum "We Can Never Go Home" y ahora en diciembre Van Petegem publicó a través de su cuenta de Bandcamp su más reciente disco “Happiness is Obsolete and Instrumentals”. 

El título del álbum es una cita del filósofo alemán Theodor W. Adorno quien afirma, junto al compositor austríaco Hanns Eisler que, "siempre se ha dicho que la música libera o gratifica las emociones, pero estas emociones en sí siempre han sido difíciles de definir" (“Audio Culture, Readings in Modern Music”, Continuum, 2005).

A través de las canciones de “Happiness is Obsolete Songs and Instrumentals” la felicidad aparece como una emoción efímera y hasta obsoleta. En cualquier caso, el carácter rítmico, la electrónica envolvente y las líneas ambientales es lo distintivo de la música de Styrofoam. Una música armónica cuyas melodías edificantes son la columna vertebral que atraviesan las ocho canciones de este álbum. “Accidentally Left-Wing” comienza lentamente con una arrastrada percusión que al cabo de unos minutos, una bella línea ambiental se eleva hasta lo alto. “Baroque Tape” tiene un carácter lúdico donde las notas sintetizadas dialogan entre sí, junto a un galopante ritmo. “Tape Travel is Lonely” es como una caja musical donde las notas tintinean y brillan por si solas. “Happiness is Obsolete” - que cierra el álbum – invita a moverse suavemente y a dejarse llevar por las sensaciones del pop onírico.

Styrofoam muestra una gran sensibilidad melódica y rítmica, creando una atmósfera plácida y acogedora.

Belgian musician Arne Van Petegem aka Styrofoam between 2000 and 2010 has released six albums, as well as several EP's and singles on Berlin based Morr Music and Nettwerk labels. In 2018, the Greek Sound In Silence imprint published his album "We Can Never Go Home" and now in December Van Petegem published his latest album "Happiness is Obsolete and Instrumentals” through his Bandcamp account.

The title of the album is a quote from the German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno who affirms, together with the Austrian composer Hanns Eisler that, "it has always been said that music releases or gratifies the emotions, but these emotions themselves have always been difficult to define" (The Politics Of Hearing” (“Audio Culture, Readings in Modern Music”, Continuum, 2005).

Across the songs of "Happiness is Obsolete Songs and Instrumentals" happiness appears as an ephemeral and even obsolete emotion. In any case, the rhythmic character, the enveloping electronics and the ambient lines is the hallmark of Styrofoam's music. Harmonious music and the uplifting melodies are the backbone that runs through the eight songs on this album. “Accidentally Left-Wing” begins slowly with a dragging percussion that after a few minutes surges a gorgeous ambient line rises to the top. “Baroque Tape” has a playful character where the synthesized notes create a dialogue, together with a galloping rhythm. “Tape Travel is Lonely” is like a music box where the notes tinkle and shine by themselves. “Happiness is Obsolete” - which closes the album - invites the listener to move gently and let itself be carried away by the sensations of the dream pop song.

Styrofoam shows great melodic and rhythmic sensitivity, creating a placid and a cozy atmosphere.
