Lunt | "Remember We Were Waiting For The Snow" | Cruel Nature | 2022

Lunt | "Remember We Were Waiting For The Snow" | Cruel Nature | 2022

Lunt is the project of Latvian artist Gilles Deles-Velins who has been active since 2001 with several albums to his credit. He has worked on a wide range of experimental projects, as a composer, sound engineer and is a co-founder of the French label We Are Unique! records.

The title of the album catches my attention when I relate it to the press release that mention that this record deals with "solastalgia"; which is the anguish that environmental change produces in people who are directly connected to their home environment.

"Remember We Were Waiting For The Snow" consists of eight songs that display electric guitar chords where soft forms predominate, except on the tracks "Plasma (Under The Ice)" and "Dead Man In The Snow", showcasing eerie incursions of sharp distortions.

For this record, Gilles was inspired by the work of soundscape artists Jim O'Rourke and Steven R. Smith. I would also add the work of guitarist Vini Reilly (Durutti Column) for his crystal clear guitar playing and calm ambiances.

The elegiac atmospheres of this guitar-driven ambient together with some electronic textures like in "Crossing Daugava", is the soundtrack of "solastalgia", this permanent state of mind that can occur when, for example, it doesn't rain enough to get out of the drought, as is the case here in Chile. Nevertheless, Lunt's music is gorgeous, like the dreamy chords in “Flakes And Feathers”.

Gilles Deles-Velins with his music relieves the climate change crisis that is directly affecting people every day.
