Ian Hawgood & Stijn Hüwels | "Voices" | Home Normal | 2021

Ian Hawgood is one of the most representative artists of ambient music nowadays. He is curator for the labels Home Normal, Nomadic Kids Republic, Tokyo Droning, among others. He has a long discography spread across Morr Music, 12k, Laaps, Slowcraft, Dauw, Slaapwel and Home Normal labels. He has collaborated with numerous artists such as Danny Norbury, Phil Tomsett, Giulio Aldinucci, Wil Bolton, Aaron Martin, among many others. He also masters for various labels and artists.

Hawgood works with an array of tape recorders and tape recorders, as well as extensive techniques such as field recordings. He works on various collaborative projects like Slow Reels, Monogoto, Observatories, Rosales, to name a few.

Stijn Hüwels is a Belgian musician who uses processed guitars, loops, and field recordings. He has albums released on Dauw, mAtter, Genot Center, Eilean Rec and Home Normal imprints.

“Voices” is a long ambient / drone journey combining acoustic and analog sounds. Guitars, synthesizers, and field recordings are part of the thick textures that create beautiful electronic soundscapes.

As I write this review, I listen to the music as a backdrop and conjure up images of a dream… going to live near the sea to smell that strong smell of iodine that the Pacific Ocean has that bathes our coasts in this part of the world. Cold as ice and rich in its underwater nature. My mind was suddenly transported without realizing it. It must be because of those dreamy sound collages of superb melodies that repeat themselves forever as if they didn't want to leave this space.
